Except for casinos on Native American reservations, North Carolina outlaws most kinds of gambling; however, bingo and raffles are permitted provided they are supported by nonprofit or philanthropic organizations. The state also authorizes a lottery to aid in funding education.
North Carolina’s Gaming Laws
It is expressly stated in North Carolina General Statutes Article 37, 14-292 that engaging in illicit gambling is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Any lottery game that is legally run in the state is not considered illegal gambling; rather, it is any gambling that is done outside the authorized native lands. This illegal difference also covers related acts such as running pyramid and chain schemes, hosting games on a faro bank or table, operating gaming tables, punchboards, and slot machines, and gambling in public amusement establishments.
In 2005, the North Carolina State Lottery Act was also passed, creating a lottery to support school building, public education, and scholarship programs.
Indian Casinos
A third tribal casino is slated to open in the summer of 2015 in North Carolina, where there are already two tribal casinos that are currently operating in accordance with the Tribal-State Gaming Compact. Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel, a $110 million facility with 60,000 square feet of gaming space and 300 rooms, will open alongside Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel and Cherokee Tribal Bingo. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are developing a new casino with 1,200 slot machines and 40–50 table games on 85 acres of tribal territory in western North Carolina.
Sports Betting In North Carolina
According to General Statutes Article 37, which defines gambling as running a game of chance, participating in or wagering on any game of chance where money, property, or other valuables are bet, whether or not those things are at stake, sports betting is prohibited in the state of North Carolina.
Online Sportsbooks
Despite the fact that North Carolina does not have any physical or online sportsbooks, gamblers still have a wide range of offshore options to select from. Most people agree that using offshore sportsbooks is far safer than using local bookmakers. Online bettors can benefit from a range of selections and the ease of making bets directly from a computer or mobile device. However, local bookies may not always provide lines and payouts, so they should be wary of trustworthy and well-reviewed offshore shops.
North Carolina’s Poker and Casino
Except for those held on tribal lands, poker and other casino games are illegal in the state of North Carolina.
Online Poker
Since North Carolina does not allow poker rooms, interested players must go for offshore poker websites in order to play. This makes online gaming appealing.
Other North Carolina Gaming Options
It is permitted for nonprofit and philanthropic groups to have raffles and bingo, but they cannot be held concurrently. Bingo operators are required to have a license, and they can host two sessions a week with a $500 maximum prize per game. A nonprofit organization may only hold raffles twice a year, with a maximum award of $10,000 in cash or $50,000 in products.
Lotto in North Carolina
The General Assembly of the state of North Carolina approved the lottery in 2005 and allotted the proceeds to educational initiatives. These goals have in the past included funding for teacher wages, building and maintenance projects for schools, need-based financial aid and scholarships, and programs for digital learning.
