Located in Oceanport, New Jersey, Monmouth Park Racetrack is an American racetrack that hosts thoroughbred horse racing events. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority owns it, and Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City leases it to them for a period of five years.
The Resorts Casino & Hotel Haskell Invitational honoring Amory L. Haskell is the main event at Monmouth Park. First held as a handicap in 1968, the Haskell became an Invitational Handicap in 1981. For three-year-olds, the test is now a 1-1/8 mile run in early August. Additionally, Monmouth Park currently hosts the Jersey Derby, which was once held at Garden State Park until it closed in 2001.

Long Branch Racetrack
On July 30, 1870, the Monmouth Park Association opened the initial track in Long Branch, New Jersey. After David D. Withers, George L. Lorillard, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., and George P. Wetmore purchased it, Withers operated the establishment for over ten years and was a founding member of the racing Board of Control, which was the forerunner to The Jockey Club. The track gained prominence from 1882 to 1890, but it closed its doors when parimutuel betting was outlawed in New Jersey by legislation that was proposed in 1891 and passed in 1894. The Monmouth Park Association’s grandstand and other property were seized in May 1894 by the Eatontown, New Jersey Township Committee in order to pay back overdue taxes. The property was then put up for public auction on May 7.
The Monmouth Cup, the Freehold Stakes, and the Champion Stakes were among of the important races conducted at the Long Branch track.
Monmouth Park Jockey Club
The New Jersey Legislature established a law allowing for state regulation of horse racing in 1946. Driven by Philip H. Iselin, a textile magnate from New York City, and Amory L. Haskell, who spearheaded the legislative effort to reinstate horse racing wagering in New Jersey, the new Monmouth Park (formally known as the Monmouth Park Jockey Club) reopened on June 19, 1946, following a 53-year break, drawing 18,724 visitors. Reeve Schley, Joseph M. Roebling, John M. MacDonald, Townsend B. Martin, and James Cox Brady, Jr. also contributed to the cause.
Monmouth Park Racetrack
1985 saw the $45 million purchase of Monmouth Park by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority from the park’s previous owners, the Monmouth Park Jockey Club. “Monmouth Park Jockey Club” is the corporate name that the NJSEA still uses.
Every year, the racetrack hosts the Vans Warped Tour, a traveling music and extreme sports festival. The national tour comes through the area in July, with Monmouth Park serving as the stop in New York. 2011 saw the signing of a five-year lease with Morris Bailey, an Atlantic City co-owner of Resorts Casino Hotel, to establish a marketing alliance between the racecourse and casino. The deal made it possible for Resorts to sponsor the Haskell Invitational, and future plans call for combining loyalty programs and bringing casino performances to the racetrack. The initiative is a component of a plan to integrate casino gaming and horse racing.
The main track is a dirt oval one mile (1.6 km) long with chutes allowing races up to one and a half miles long. The grass course features a diagonal chute for races between one mile (1.6 km) and one and a half miles, and its circumference is seven furlongs. In 2006, the grass course underwent a redesign that included the addition of a second chute to enable sprint races lasting five and a half furlongs. There are three options for turf races: around the hedge, or with the moveable rail extended 12 feet (“Haskell Course”), 24 feet (“Monmouth Course”), or 36 feet (“Lennox Course”).
Immediately north of the main track’s rear stretch, the Stable Area has a total of forty barns and stables: twelve north of the North Jersey Coast Line of New Jersey Transit (which is connected by a separate service and access road), and twenty-eight on the main complex.
Adjacent to and just west of the main complex is Wolf Hill Farm, which provided private stable and practice facilities for Monmouth Park. The Valentino family from the neighboring City of Long Branch, New Jersey, owned and operated Wolf Hill, which had stables, barns, and a practice track with a grass course and dirt oval that were exactly like those at Monmouth Park’s main facilities but constructed at a scale of 50%. Wolf Hill Farm was part of the larger Monmouth Park Complex when the Valentino Family sold it to the Monmouth Park Jockey Club in 1963. Following the NJSEA’s 1986 takeover, it was subsequently sold to the Monmouth County area System in 1998, which is currently in charge of running the location as a passive recreation area. Owners and trainers used Wolf Hill’s practice track well into the 1990s, even though the farm closed its doors in 1963. Up until the 2009 meeting, evidence of the practice was still evident on the property. Construction started in the Wolf Hill region after the 2009 meet, removing the last portion of the practice track.
