Located in Sunland Park, New Mexico, a suburb of El Paso, the Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino is a racino that offers gambling opportunities. Beginning in December and continuing through April, the track hosts live races for both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. One of the most notable events of the meet is the Sunland Derby, which has a prize pool of 800,000. One of the most important preparation races for the Kentucky Derby, the race was elevated to the Grade III level for the 2010 edition of the racing competition.
Sunland Park History
When it first opened its doors in 1959, Sunland Park racecourse & Casino was nothing more than a racecourse. In the 1990s, the horse racing sector in New Mexico was experiencing a downturn, therefore the state decided to allow slot machines on racetracks in an effort to salvage the horse racing industry. A total of twenty-six percent of the revenue generated by the casino is allocated to taxes, and an extra twenty percent is allocated to the horseman’s account. The horseman’s account is responsible for contributing all of the money that is in it to the horse racing purses at Sunland Park.
The $100,000 Borderland Derby, a 1 1/16-mile prep for the WinStar, the $200,000 WinStar Sunland Park Oaks 1-1/16 miles for fillies, the $150,000 Harry W. Henson Breeders’ Cup Handicap for fillies and mares at one mile, the $150,000 Riley Allison Futurity, 6-1/2 furlongs for 2-year-olds, and the $100,000 Sunland Park Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1-1/8 miles are among the notable races.
Sunland’s most prestigious event for quarter horses is the $400,000 Grade 1 Championship, which takes place at 440 yards at the end of December every year. April is the month that sees the $300,000 Grade New Mexican Spring Futurity running at 300 yards.
