In the city of East Boston, Massachusetts, there is a thoroughbred racetrack known as Suffolk Downs. The track is a dirt oval measuring one mile (1.6 kilometers) in length, and it has an inner turf track measuring seven furlongs. “MassCap” is an abbreviation for the Massachusetts Handicap, which is a flat thoroughbred horse race that is contested yearly at Suffolk Downs and is worth $500,000; however, the race has not been held since 2008.
Suffolk Downs History
The year 1935 marked the opening of Suffolk Downs, which was one year after the state of Massachusetts allowed parimutuel betting. That same year also saw the maiden voyage of the Massachusetts Handicap. At a performance that took place on the infield of the track on August 18, 1966, The Beatles performed in front of 24,000 people. At Suffolk Downs, there was no racing that took place between the years 1990 and 1991. Both the track and the MassCap made their comeback after a six-year hiatus in 1992 and 1995, respectively.
In 2008, Suffolk Downs made history by being the first racetrack in the United States to establish a policy of complete and utter indifference toward the slaughter of horses. If a horse from Suffolk Downs is sold for slaughter, the regulation stipulates that the trainer and owner of that horse will be permanently barred from the grounds. This prohibition will last for the rest of their lives. At the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Farm in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Suffolk Downs, the Fields Family Foundation, and the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation have developed a home for retired racehorses. Members of the Plymouth County Correctional Facility are responsible for providing care for the horses.
