Located in the unincorporated northwest section of Houston, Texas, Sam Houston Race Park is a horse racing track that is known for its location. In addition to Thoroughbred racing activities, the park also hosts American Quarter Horse racing competitions.
Sam Houston History
The first construction of a Class 1 horse racing venue in the state of Texas, the park opened its doors on April 24, 1994. The building was constructed at a cost of around $90 million, and when it is not being used for racing, it is utilized as a venue for concerts.
On a yearly basis, the race track plays host to two live race meets. Between the months of January and March, thoroughbred horse racing takes place. Racing for American Quarter Horses takes place from March to May of each year.
7/8 of a mile is the length of the grass track. When the poles are in the zero rail position, it has a width of 80 feet; when the poles are in the 9 foot rail position, it has a width of 71 feet; and when the poles are in the 18 foot rail position, it has a width of 62 feet. During the summer months, the track includes 419 Hybrid Bermuda grass that is one inch deep. Rye grass that is one inch deep is what makes up the wintertime portion of it.
