In Bensalem, Pennsylvania, there is a thoroughbred horse racetrack and racino called Parx Racing and Casino. There are 3,300 slot machines there right now. Every year in September, it hosts the $1,000,000 Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby.
Parx Racing History
When it first opened in November 1974, Bensalem, Pennsylvania’s Keystone Racetrack took the place of Liberty Bell Park Racetrack as the region’s thoroughbred track. When ITB bought the racetrack in 1984, it got a new turf course, a new name, Philadelphia Park, and a novel new way to bet dubbed Phonebet.
When British bookmakers Bob Green and Bill Hogwood created Greenwood Racing, Inc. in 1989, the racetrack saw another change of ownership when Greenwood Racing, Inc. bought the oval from ITB in December 1990. Fans of horse racing may now watch and wager seven days a week thanks to the addition of full card simulcasting and six off-track sites known as Turf Clubs.
With the acquisition of Freehold Raceway in Freehold Borough, New Jersey, and the operational lease of Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Greenwood partnered with Penn National Gaming, Inc., another Pennsylvanian firm, to expand into New Jersey towards the end of 1998. The goal of the new venture, known as Pennwood, was to target account wagering and off-track gaming in the Garden State. Garden State Park was demolished soon after it closed in 2002. In March 2010, Comcast stopped simulcasting on its cable television networks, particularly those under its ownership. Shortly after, TVG Network became part of Comcast, and in October 2010, the company partnered with Harrah’s Chester to launch its own simulcasting betting accounts. The track’s new name, Parx Racing and Casino, went into effect on August 30, 2010.
Remarkable horses that have won at Parx Racing and Casino over the years include Shuvee, My Juliet, Spectacular Bid, Revidere, Summer Squall, and Broad Brush. The track gained notoriety as the original residence of Smarty Jones, the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner who finished second in the Belmont Stakes and almost missed the Triple Crown.
