An extensive casino resort and thoroughbred racetrack, Mountaineer Park is located southwest of Chester in the state of West Virginia. The primary dirt track has a distance of one mile and features a little twist in the front stretch of the course. Inside of the dirt track is where you’ll find the turf course, which is seven furlongs in length. On the premises of the racetrack is also a sizable casino and resort. Two hundred seventeen racing events took place at this thoroughbred track in 2012, making it one of the busiest thoroughbred events in the country. Beginning in March and continuing through December, Mountaineer typically operates five evenings a week.
Mountaineer Park History
The track first opened its doors on May 19, 1951, and it was formerly known as Waterford Park. Mountaineer Park was renamed in 1987, and in 1994, MTR Gaming Group purchased the track and added casino gaming to the property. Before that, the park was known as Mountaineer Park. There was an increase in Mountaineer Park’s reputation as a result of the casino’s money, which enabled the track to offer greater payouts. The track has also benefited from the West Virginia Derby for a number of reasons.
