In Bossier City, Louisiana, there is a racino and horse racing track called Louisiana Downs. In 1974, Louisiana Downs opened. Thistledown and Remington Park are the other two racetracks that shopping center developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. created. DeBartolo Sr. has continuously supported horse racing. Held annually in September at the traditional 1-1/4 mile (2,000 m) stakes distance popular in the United States, the track is home to the Grade II Super Derby. Winners and top finishers from the American Classic Races of the season frequently attend the race. Starting in early May and lasting until October is the Thoroughbred meet. From January through March, there is a quarter horse meet.

Louisiana Downs History

Approximately 15,000 spectators attended the opening day of Louisiana Downs’ inaugural meet on October 30, 1974, at the 350-acre facility in Bossier City, Louisiana, which is close to Shreveport. The late Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr., was the shopping center entrepreneur who built the track. It was an immediate success, breaking multiple national records for handle and attendance in the 1970s and 1980s.

Plans were made in 1980 to hold the first Super Derby, a 1-1/4 mile event, in the fall with the intention of drawing the nation’s top three-year-olds and influencing the end-of-the-year championships. The event was the richest ever for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, with a purse of $500,000. Temperence Hill, the winner of the Belmont Stakes, became just the third Thoroughbred in history to win more than $1 million when she won the first Super Derby on October 18, 1980. Four Kentucky Derby winners, four Preakness Stakes winners, five Belmont Stakes winners, and seven Travers Stakes winners have all appeared in the Super Derby throughout its 24 runnings. Previous Super Derby competitors have won the coveted Breeders’ Cup Classic six times, and three times—Tiznow, Sunday Silence, and Alysheba—have received the Eclipse Award, the highest honor in the industry, for Horse of the Year. With good reason, the race is becoming one of the most anticipated of the year across the country.

The track, which Caesars Entertainment acquired in December 2002, remains dedicated to providing the best and most thrilling Thoroughbred racing every day of the season, drawing some of the best horses and trainers in the nation year after year. Louisiana Downs holds a quarter horse meet each winter that features the world’s fastest breed of horses.
