It was in 1911 when the American thoroughbred racetrack known as Laurel Park first opened its doors. Laurel Park is located just outside of Laurel Maryland. In addition to a chute that is seven and a half furlongs long, the main track is an oval that is one mile and 600 feet long. The grass track is located exactly 254 feet away from the main track and is seven and a half miles long.
Laurel Park History
The Laurel Four County Fair was the organization that oversaw the opening of the Laurel Park Racecourse on October 2, 1911. After being owned by Philip J. Dwyer and James Butler in 1914, the track was then sold to the Maryland Jockey Club in 1947. The Maryland Jockey Club then sold the track to the Schapiro family in 1950. Between the years 1950 and 1985, the track underwent a name change to Laurel Race Course and experienced rapid expansion. Laurel Park was the name that was given to the track in 1994, and ever since then, it has been subjected to a series of ongoing modifications and renovations.
One-turn mile races are now offered on the main course, which was redesigned in 2005 and raised and widened from 75 to 95 feet. All of these changes were made. It is the same as the original Laurel soil surface in terms of its composition, which consists of 89 percent sand and 11 percent silt and clay. The width of the new turf course expanded from 75 feet to 142 feet, and it can allow six different track configurations.
