A Thoroughbred horse racing facility and sales complex, Keeneland is located in Lexington, Kentucky, in the United States of America. The Keeneland Association, Inc. is the organization that runs the facility, and it is also well-known for its reference library on the sport. The library has more than 10,000 volumes, a large collection of videocassettes, and a big collection of photo negatives and newspaper clippings.
The Horseplayers Association of North America (HPA) implemented a ranking system for sixty-five Thoroughbred racetracks across the continent of North America in the year 2009. Keeneland gained the number one spot on the list of the top ten racetrack. Both the National Register of Historic Places and the National Historic Landmark designation were bestowed upon it in the following year, 1986.
Keeneland Race Course History
147 acres (0.59 km2) of farmland west of Lexington, which had been held by Jack Keene, the main force behind the establishment of the facility, was the location where Keeneland was established in 1935 as a racing-auction organization that was solely for charitable purposes. Both the thoroughbred industry and the community in the surrounding area have benefited from the company’s fundraising efforts, which have included the proceeds from its auctions and races. Since the year 1936, the Keeneland Race Course, which is the racing section of Keeneland, has been hosting live race meets in the months of April and October. The year 1985 saw the addition of a grass course. One of the most prominent preparations for the Kentucky Derby, which takes place on the first Saturday in May, is the Blue Grass Stakes, which is one of the races that takes place during the spring meet. At the fall meet, there are numerous preparations for the Breeders’ Cup.
It was the final track in North America to broadcast race calls over its public-address system, and Keeneland was the first track to do so in 1997. Keeneland takes great interest in preserving the traditions of racing. Due to the fact that Keeneland has undergone relatively little change in look over the course of the past few decades, the majority of the racing scenes in the film Seabiscuit, which was released in 2003, were shot there.
The city of Keeneland has recently implemented a number of new ideas. During the summer of 2006, in preparation for the fall race meeting, it redesigned the main track and replaced the dirt surface with the highly specialized Polytrack surface. Mr. Rogers Beasley, who has served as the director of racing at Keeneland since 2006, has characterized the track as “selectively conservative.”
Additionally, there is a turf oval of seven and one-half furlongs (1509 meters) and a Polytrack oval measuring one and one-sixteenth mile (1710 meters). As was mentioned earlier, the Polytrack surface was installed among the meetings that took place between April and October of 2006. There are two different setups for the turf course: the Keeneland Course design contains a temporary rail that is fifteen feet out, while the Haggin Course does not have a temporary rail.
