In Elora, Ontario, there is a small harness racing track called Grand River Raceway. The track is half a mile (350 feet) long, with a granular basis and a stonedust track cushion. There are 1500 seats overall, divided between an open grandstand and a covered space. The track debuted on December 6, 2003, and offers year-round simulcast racing in addition to seasonal harness racing. The gaming area has two restaurants, Lighthouse Restaurant and Captain’s Quarters Tiered Dining Room, in addition to 240 slot machines.
Grand River Raceway History
Located in the southern part of the charming village of Elora, Ontario, Grand River Raceway is the country’s newest racing and gaming attraction. It is also conveniently close to the historic town of Fergus. The region is well known for its magnificent landscape, which includes the majestic Grand River, towering pines, and glacial rock formations.
Owner and operator of Grand River Raceway is the Woolwich Agricultural Society (WAS). Under the Agricultural Societies Act of Ontario, the WAS is a non-profit organization run by a volunteer board of directors.
Grand River Raceway hosts live harness racing from June through October. Through its four cinemas, the racecourse also hosts daily harness and thoroughbred simulcasts. The races on Industry Day that are noteworthy are the Battle of the Belles and the Battle of Waterloo.
Grand River Raceway’s main event of the racing season is Industry Day. It takes place every year on Civic Holiday Monday, which is the first Monday in August, during a special afternoon racing program.
In 1990, Elmira Raceway hosted Industry Day as a celebration of the harness racing sector. After moving to Grand River Raceway in nearby Elora, ON in December 2003, the track held its inaugural Industry Day celebration there in August 2004.
One of the most anticipated occasions in Canadian harness racing, Industry Day draws race fans from all around the province.
The race, which debuted at Industry Day in 1998, is Grand River Raceway’s marquee event, the 2-year-old Ontario-bred pacing colts’ Battle Of Waterloo. Distinctiv Skeeter for trainer/driver Carl Jamieson was the first-place winner.

Grand River Raceway introduced the Battle Of The Belles, a companion event for 2-year-old Ontario-sired pace fillies, in 2009. Trainer Mario Macri and driver Scott Zeron, who was 19 at the time, made FBS Terror the First Lady of the Battle of the Belles.
