One of the best places in Western New York to watch live thoroughbred racing is at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack! As a result of its location in the midst of the numerous vineyards and breathtaking scenery that are characteristic of the Finger Lakes region of New York, Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack has become a popular destination not only among the locals but also among the thousands of tourists who visit the region on regular basis.

Since it first opened its doors in 1962, Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack has played host to more than 62,000 horse races and has provided entertainment to more than 19 million fans. Each season, the track has roughly 160 race days.

Finger Lakes Racetrack History

On May 23, 1962, Pure Village won the first race ever held at Finger Lakes with a time of 1:17 3/5 for six furlongs. This was the beginning of everything that became possible. In the fifty years that have passed since then, “the thumb” has played host to some of the most accomplished jockeys and thoroughbreds in the sport. These riders include Angel Cordero, Pat Day, Julie Krone, and Bill Shoemaker, all of whom are inducted into the Hall of Fame. The following are some additional noteworthy events that took place at the track:

After winning all three of the Triple Crowns in 1978, Steve Cauthen was able to draw in 11,030 spectators and establish a new record for the amount of money wagered on the track, which was $765,580.

It was in 1996 when the famed horse Fio Rito was laid to rest in the infield of the Finger Lakes racetrack. This made him the first horse to be laid to rest on the Finger Lakes grounds. He was the New York State Horse of the Year in 1980, and he won the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. He went on to dominate at Finger Lakes during his whole career, winning 19 of his 27 appearances there. This brought him to the attention of people all around the country.

At a little more than two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, the New York Breeders Futurity drew the richest purse in the history of the track in the year 2006.

In the $100,000 Wadsworth Memorial Handicap, which took place at Finger Lakes on July 4, 2007, Funny Cide made history by being the first horse to ever compete in and win the Kentucky Derby. In the final race of his career, the champion made a charge from behind and pulled away from the competition down the stretch, which was witnessed by a crowd of more than 12,000 people.

In 2002, Finger Lakes became the first place in the country to introduce an Equine Swim Facility, which is one of the few aquatic facilities that are located on track grounds. Additionally, in February of 2004, the establishment implemented video game machines, thereby changing itself into a location that offers a variety of leisure options. During the course of our yearly season of stakes, the New York Derby, which takes place in July, serves as the second leg of the Big Apple Triple for three-year-old horses that were born in New York. An additional highlight is the New York Breeders’ Futurity, which takes place in the early autumn. On our 450-acre property, there are currently 21 barns that are home to more than 1,200 race horses. In addition to the horse swimming facility that is considered to be among the best in the world, Finger Lakes includes a primary racing track that is one mile long, a training track that is half a mile long, and more than 1,500 video gaming equipment. Additionally, the facility has seen more than 1.7 million visitors.
