In the winter and spring, Northville Downs, located in downtown Northville, Michigan, offers live harness racing on a half-mile track. Northville is a wealthy city in Michigan that is split between Wayne and Oakland counties. This region is a suburb of Detroit Metropolitan Area. For simulcast racing across the nation, it is open seven days a week.
Northville Downs History
Northville Downs became Michigan’s first harness racing track to open at night in 1944. Constructed on the location of the erstwhile Wayne County Fair, the Downs served as Joe Louis’ training ground in 1939 before his World Championship victory the same year. Situated near the intersection of Center Street and 7 Mile Road, Northville Downs has been operational since 1944. In 1919, Henry Ford bought a factory in Northville and relocated equipment from nearby companies to the new facility. Up to its closure and sale in 1981, the plant supplied valves for every Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln automobiles, with the exception of the Lincoln Continental. The Penninman-Allen Theater debuted in downtown in 1925. Skiing was popular and there were frequent tournaments when Northville was more rural.
An institution in downtown is Northville Downs. It opened for business in 1944 and was Michigan’s first harness racing track. From January through April, Northville Downs hosts live races every Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Every day from noon until midnight, the facility is open to the public and offers hundreds of national simulcast races. Both parking and entrance are complimentary.
The building by the track has multiple storeys. Folding tables, plastic chairs, and tile flooring make up the lowest portion. The clubhouse, which has multiple layers of sitting with television monitors, is located to the west of the middle floor, and stadium seating is located to the east. A self-serve deli and bar are also available on the second floor. On days when there is live racing, there are also a variety of activities and specials.
