Horse racing takes place at the Los Alamitos Race Course, which is located in Cypress, California. In addition to thoroughbred racing, the track also features quarter horse racing. With purses totaling more than one million dollars, the track holds the distinction of being the only one in the United States to host four quarter horse stakes events. In spite of the fact that the track is physically situated in the city of Cypress, it is the Los Alamitos postal address that it is associated with. To the south, Los Alamitos is located directly across Katella Avenue from where it is located.
Los Alamitos History
In spite of the fact that he had just $19 in his possession when he arrived from Kentucky, Frank Vessels Sr. succeeded in making a fortune in the construction sector and finally bought a ranch in Orange County that was 435 acres (1.76 km2) in size. The first races that took place at the location that is now known as Los Alamitos were match races that were held on the Vessels Ranch in 1947.
1951 was the year that Los Alamitos played host to the very first pari-mutual meet. The gathering lasted for eleven days, and it ended on December 15th. During the first eleven days of the competition, there was rain on ten of those days. As a result of the rain, the racecourse was damaged, and Frank Vessels and his family spent a significant amount of time during this inaugural meet fixing the damage. The mare Bart B S set a new world record with her performance in the Miss Princess Handicap during the celebrations that took place on the third and final night. She completed the 400-yard dash in a record time of 20.3 seconds.
Immediately after the first race, Mr. Vessels invested one hundred thousand dollars of his own money into the track’s enhancements. He also petitioned the California Horse Racing Board to allow him to race for a total of sixteen days, and he was successful in doing so. When compared to the first meet, the 1952 season was a financial success, as business increased by a factor of two.
During the 1955 season, Los Alamitos witnessed the birth of its first great superstar. Go Man Go was a roan quarter horse with a coon tail and a recognizable personality. He was so famous that enormous crowds would pack the grandstands and sing the name of the roan colt as he won victory after victory. Go Man Go appeared to have a distinctive appearance and a personality that was noticeable.
The first time that Dr. Ed Allred appeared at Los Alamitos as a law student was an occasion that happened without much fanfare. It was only because he had read that the Allred Brothers, who were totally unrelated to one other, were competing in a horse race at Los Alamitos that he went to the track. This one day marked the beginning of a love affair that would last for the rest of Mr. Allred’s life and eventually became the sole proprietor of Los Alamitos.
Since the beginning of time, the Vessels Family had been the sole proprietors of Los Alamitos. Nevertheless, the decade of the 1980s was a period of significant transformation, as the track was transferred from one owner to another. Allred was finally successful in acquiring fifty percent of the ownership of Los Alamitos in 1990, when the property was placed up for sale. RD Hubbard was a partner in this endeavor. It was in 1995 when the magnificent turf club restaurant known as the Vessels Club, which cost five million dollars and acquired fame for both its interior design and its cuisine, first opened its doors. In Southern California, the Vessels Club has even been recognized as the best sports park restaurant in the surrounding area. In addition to the Vessels Club, the track has also opened the Player’s Club, Rodney’s Bar (named after trainer Rodney Hart), and Schwanie’s Grill (named for trainer Blane Schvaneveldt) during Dr. Allred’s tenure. These establishments are also fan favorites.
There are unique events that take place at the track, including as the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, which is a race for two-year-olds that takes place in December. Since its inception in 1995, this yearly race has been offering a purse that is greater than one million dollars, and that amount has increased to two million dollars since 2006. There is just one Quarter Horse race in the USA that offers an additional $500,000 in prize money, and that is the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Los Alamitos Race Course is also the location of the annual Los Alamitos Super Derby, which features the biggest purse of any race for three-year-olds in the state of California. Additionally, the Governor’s Cup Futurity, which takes place in July, is the richest race among all California-bred races of any breed.
