In the city of Franklin, Kentucky, the Thoroughbred horse racing track known as Kentucky Downs can be found just off Interstate 65. This track is situated on the border between the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. The fact that it is a European-style course, it is not round in shape, and its surface is all turf (grass) rather than dirt makes it stand out among American courses. The Horseplayers Association of North America placed Kentucky Downs in the number two spot among the sixty-five Thoroughbred racetracks in North America in the year 2009.
Kentucky Downs History
On April 22, 1990, Kentucky Downs opened its doors to serve its customers. Dueling Grounds was the original name given to the race track in order to pay homage to the eventful past that was directly related with the site.
Dueling Grounds held its first Thoroughbred race during the 1992 race season, following a period of two years during which it exclusively hosted Sprint and Steeplechase competitions. Dueling Grounds was the name of the racetrack while it was in operation until 1997, when new owners changed the name of the track to Kentucky Downs. A group of investors made the decision to purchase a controlling stake in Kentucky Downs in 2007, with the intention of expanding the scope of the company’s operations in the years to come.
One of the only race courses in North America designed in the “European-style” format, Kentucky Downs has its live turf racing meet in September. The Grade III Kentucky Turf Cup race is held annually at the meet, which is held in a festival-like atmosphere and features the opportunity to participate in the competition. In addition, Kentucky Downs provides simulcasting throughout the whole year, acts as the venue for a wide variety of special and entertainment events, and organizes charity bingo for a number of community-based groups in Franklin and Simpson County.
