Located in Hallandale Beach, Florida, Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino is a racetrack and racino that has received county approval. It is one of the most significant horse racing venues in America from January through April during its annual meet.
Gulfstream Park History
On Wednesday, February 1, 1939, Gulfstream Park debuted for business with a four-day gathering. The first conference drew eighteen thousand people. James Donn, Sr. reopened the track in 1944 for a 20-day meeting in December. 1946 saw the inaugural running of the Gulfstream Park Handicap, while 1952 saw the start of the Florida Derby. That year saw the construction of the clubhouse and an increase of Grandstand seating.
In 1959, Gulfstream Park hosted the first grass racing event.
James Donn Jr. replaced his father as Gulfstream Park president in 1961. This year saw the expansion of the Clubhouse and the installation in the infield of the largest totalisator board in the world at the time. The track received “middle dates” for a 40-day meet that took place in January through April of 1972, which was a huge break for Gulfstream Park.
1983 saw the completion of the clubhouse makeover, and 1982 had the Grandstand refurbished with new architecture. The new Gulfdome, a domed dining patio, completed the track’s refurbishment in 1986. First held in 1989, Gulfstream Park went on to host the Breeders Cup twice more, in 1992 and 1999.
Bertram R. Firestone owned the track in 1990. Nigashi Nihon purchased a fifty percent stake in the song in 1994. Magna Entertainment Corporation paid $95 million for the track in 1999. The parent company of Magna, MI Developments Inc. (MID), acquired control of the track in 2010.
2004 saw the track accept slot machines and start a $130 million refurbishment of the grandstand and clubhouse. It and Santa Anita Park both participate in the Sunshine Millions races.
Racegoers and critics harshly criticized the refurbishment, which went into effect for the 2006 spring meeting. They believed that the new racino destroyed the ambiance of the racecourse by putting all of its focus on the casino.
