Cubs Biggest Weakness Revealed: Starting Pitching Tops Concerns
In the first three games of the four-game series that will finish at Citi Field this evening, the batters have shown a significant improvement in their performance against the Mets, scoring a total of 29 runs from the plate.
As Josh mentioned in After Dark, the Cubs have partially solved the starting pitching issue by obtaining left-handed pitcher David Peterson from the Mets. Peteson was acquired from the Mets. It was late this morning that the organization made the announcement of this agreement, and I anticipate that Peterson will start one of the games that will be played against the Brewers in Milwaukee this coming weekend. On Sunday, he left the Mets’ lineup for the final time. Yosver Zulueta, a right-handed reliever, was designated for assignment in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Peterson.
The Cubs are still in need of some bullpen aid, and it is hoped that they will be able to acquire a player either before or at the time of the trade deadline.
The results of the four national questions that were asked in the SB Nation Reacts survey that was conducted this week are presented here.
There is a somewhat even distribution of this across the top three. Over the course of the past ten seasons, the Guardians have won six AL Central championships, and they always manage to find a way to come out on top.
To take into account all of the potential candidates, it is phrased in a slightly different way. To tell you the truth, I believe that the Cubs ought to have been included in this. After making it to the American League Championship Series and coming agonizingly close to winning the World Series in 2025, the Mariners have struggled this year. When it comes to their pitching staff, they have experienced injury problems similar to those that the Cubs have. In my opinion, they wind up winning the American League West in the end.
From a personal standpoint, I am free to choose either approach. The “swing based” method that they are returning to (as opposed to the timer system that has been employed for the past many years) is something that should aid players, many of whom report feeling weary after attempting to take as many swings as they can while being limited by a time constraint.
Jack Morris of the Tigers, who threw a no-hitter against the White Sox in 1984, Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs in 2008, Cole Hamels of the Cubs, who threw a no-hitter against the Cubs in 2015, and the combined no-hitter of the Cubs at Wrigley Field in 2024 are the four baseball accomplishments that I have witnessed firsthand.
Willie McGee’s cycle in the Sandberg Game in 1984, Mark Grace’s cycle for the Cubs in 1993, and Pete Crow-Armstrong’s cycle for the Cubs last week are the three cycles that I have witnessed by themselves.
Both cycles and no-hitters are extremely uncommon in baseball. In the history of Major League Baseball, there have been 327 no-hitters and 352 cycles.
More than twice as many triple plays have been played since 1876, totaling 740 of them. Two years ago, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, I was able to witness one of them, which was turned over by the Cubs in June of 1983.
The game with four home runs is the most uncommon of these. The history of Major League Baseball only includes 21 games with four home runs. In 1976, Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies was the one who made one of them at Wrigley Field. In the beginning of this year, I also wrote that up here, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. But I was not present at that game. In that case, the game with four home runs is the one I’d most prefer to watch. What would you choose to do?
