Yankees vs Red Sox Rivalry: Most Iconic Pitching Matchups in MLB History
If there is one thing that New Yorkers enjoy more than anything else, it is a title that attracts their attention. In the city that never stops moving, from the front page to the back of the tabloids to the names that are lit up in the marquee lights, the city is a source of inspiration. Despite the fact that there is never a shortage of things to do or people to see in this location, Cam Schlittler’s starts have become an event that everybody must witness every week. During tonight’s feature in Boston, Schlittler will be returning to his hometown for yet another early chapter in a story that is quickly developing into something quite remarkable.
Already, Schlittler has etched his name into the annals of history, marking his place in one of the most storied rivalries in the history of sports. However, following tonight, two of those three chapters will feature the same opposition toeing the rubber: Connelly Early. This is a significant development. Early is going up against Schlittler. Although it is not yet Ali against Frazier, one can still dream about it.
As a result of the five-man rotation and the decreased number of division games that are played each year, the days of seeing the same starters line up against each other on a regular basis are long gone. At this point, supporters are considered fortunate if they are able to witness their favorite player compete against the opponent’s favorite player more than a few times during the course of the season. The fact that the Yankees’ best young pitcher will be facing up against one of Boston’s finest young pitchers for the second time in the past four months is a reality that contributes to the development of the tale that will take place tonight.
As a result of this, I found myself reflecting about some memorable matchups from the past. What kinds of confrontations did each age get to experience? During the competition, who compared themselves against each other, and how did they fair in comparison to one another?
The first true “our guy versus their guy” showdown is Red Ruffing in the blue corner and Lefty Grove in the red corner. I apologize to Jack Chesbro and Cy Young himself for making this statement, but it seems appropriate to include them in this discussion. Consequently, the records that are listed are wins, losses, and no decisions. I made the decision to count no-decisions as ties or at the very least list them as such. Over the span of the 1930s and 1940s, the former Red Sox right-handed pitcher Ruffing had 31 starts and finished with a record of 11-14-6. He was paired with another Hall of Famer. That total of 31 head-to-head encounters between starting pitchers for the Yankees and the Red Sox was the most number of such encounters that I was able to locate.
It’s nearly unfathomable to think that you could start today’s games against one opposing pitcher and still have enough starts to last an entire season. To provide a point of reference, over his entire career with the Yankees, Gerrit Cole has only made a total of twelve starts versus the Red Sox.
Mel Stottlemyre and Luis Tiant were featured in yet another duel that was quite regular. Around the same time when five-man rotations became the norm in the early 1970s, these two competitors competed against one another twelve times. Due to the fact that they competed against each other four times between July 16th and September 17th of 1972 and then five more times during the 1973 season, it is possible that they have created some kind of common-law bond.
Out of those matches, Stottlemyre had a record of 6-5-1. Together, the two players played a total of thirteen full games. Additionally, Stottlemyre maintained the advantage in that regard by throwing seven of them.
One of the most intense pitching battles in the history of the rivalry took place around the turn of the century. Roger Clemens and Pedro Martínez, two of the most ferocious rivals who have ever taken the mound, faced each other six times. Getting closer to the current day results in a significant decrease in the number of matchups, but this particular one stands out due to the fact that it features conflicts that took place in October.
While playing for the Yankees, Clemens had a record of 1-2-3 against Pedro and his former team, including a loss to Pedro in Game 3 of the 1999 American League Championship Series at Fenway Park. Nevertheless, that one triumph was a significant one, as it occurred four years later during another Game 3 battle in Beantown that took place. His offense rescued him from a difficult beginning by putting together a tremendous rally against Martínez in the eighth inning, which resulted in him receiving a no-decision in the unforgettable seventh game. Fans and members of the New York media alike considered Clemens and Pedro to be the ideal couple since they were both larger-than-life figures who were also very hot.
Moving forward in time by around ten years, we have arrived at the contemporary interpretation of lifespan. When they were serving as the left-handed aces for their respective teams, CC Sabathia and Jon Lester faced each other eight times.
The lead for Sabathia was 3-2-3 at the time. The duel was a fittingly balanced contest given that both pitchers concluded their careers with ERAs and WHIPs that were comparable to one another, despite the fact that Sabathia had earned 51 more victories and pitched 837.1 more innings.
As we move on to Round 2, Schlittler and Early will be on the stage. It is possible that supporters of the Yankees and the Red Sox may have the opportunity to witness these two teams continue to write their own chapter in the rivalry over the course of the next few years, provided that they do not suffer from any injuries, lockouts, or other misfortunes.
It is my sincere wish that the Yankees will prevail the majority of the time.
