South Dakota travels to Boise for a major Week 3 college football matchup against Boise State on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The Coyotes enter the game unbeaten at 3-0, while the Broncos are 1-1 after opening the season with a narrow loss at Oregon before defeating Memphis at home.
The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. MT at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho. South Dakota’s official schedule lists the kickoff at 9 p.m. Central Time, while Boise State lists it as 8 p.m. Mountain Time.
This is an intriguing matchup because South Dakota has been one of the more impressive FCS teams through the opening three weeks.
The Coyotes are 3-0 after beating Central Connecticut State 59-20, Northern Colorado 38-23 and Eastern Washington 41-23. They have scored at least 38 points in every game and have produced more than 500 yards of offense in each of their first two home games.
Boise State, meanwhile, has already faced two FBS opponents.
The Broncos lost 34-27 at Oregon despite leading for significant portions of the game, then responded with a 38-20 victory over Memphis. Boise State produced 578 total yards against Memphis, including 357 rushing yards.
The matchup therefore pits a high-powered FCS offense against an FBS program that has shown considerable offensive explosiveness.
The latest analytical projections strongly favor Boise State. One model gives the Broncos a 99% win probability and projects a 47-11 final score. Another power-rating system lists Boise State as a 28.5-point favorite.
For this analysis, Boise State -28.5 is used as the working spread and 57.5 points as the working total.
The best South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction is Boise State -28.5 at the working number.
The secondary selection is Over 57.5 points.
South Dakota deserves significant respect after opening the season 3-0. The Coyotes have been explosive offensively, and quarterback Austyn Modrzewski has thrown for at least 200 yards and multiple touchdowns in all three games. Against Eastern Washington, he completed 16 of 24 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
However, Boise State represents a substantial jump in overall competition.
The Broncos have already competed against Oregon and Memphis, and their rushing attack has been particularly impressive. Boise State ran for 357 yards against Memphis, with Dylan Riley producing 206 yards on 19 carries.
Boise State should eventually control the line of scrimmage.
The Broncos also have the home-field advantage and considerably more FBS depth.
Projected Score: Boise State 47, South Dakota 11
That projection produces 58 total points and a 36-point Boise State victory.

- Final South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction
South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction
South Dakota has already made a statement during the opening three weeks of the 2026 season.
The Coyotes are 3-0 and have scored 138 points.
They opened with a 59-20 win over Central Connecticut State, followed that with a 38-23 victory at Northern Colorado and then defeated Eastern Washington 41-23.
The impressive part is how balanced the offense has been.
South Dakota can run the football.
It can throw the football.
It can create explosive plays.
And it has shown an ability to maintain possession.
Against Eastern Washington, South Dakota controlled the ball for 35:55 and produced 517 total yards on 67 plays. The Coyotes averaged 7.7 yards per play.
That offensive efficiency gives South Dakota a legitimate chance to score against Boise State.
The problem is that Boise State has also demonstrated an ability to produce explosive offense.
The Broncos put up 578 total yards against Memphis, including 357 rushing yards.
That is the central reason this game could produce a high final score.
South Dakota Season Analysis
South Dakota’s 3-0 start is the program’s first since 2017.
The Coyotes have been particularly effective on offense.
Their Week 3 win over Eastern Washington was their third consecutive game scoring at least 38 points.
Against Eastern Washington, South Dakota gained 517 total yards.
Charles Pierre Jr. rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns, including a 72-yard touchdown run. The performance also pushed him beyond 2,000 career rushing yards.
The passing game was equally dangerous.
Modrzewski completed 16 of 24 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Tennel Bryant recorded 120 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 66-yard touchdown reception.
That type of explosiveness is why South Dakota cannot be dismissed as a typical FCS opponent.
South Dakota’s Offensive Identity
The Coyotes are built around balance.
They do not need to throw 40 times to generate offense.
They can establish Pierre Jr. and the rushing attack before taking shots downfield.
That makes them difficult to defend.
Against Boise State, however, South Dakota will need to maintain that balance.
If the Coyotes become one-dimensional, the Broncos should be able to create pressure and force longer third downs.
South Dakota’s best strategy is to stay aggressive.
The Coyotes should use their rushing attack to slow the game while taking calculated shots against Boise State’s secondary.
Boise State Season Analysis
Boise State enters the matchup at 1-1.
The Broncos’ record does not fully describe how competitive their first two games have been.
They opened against No. 2 Oregon and lost 34-27.
Boise State actually led 17-14 at halftime before Oregon eventually pulled away.
Maddux Madsen completed 15 of 29 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.
Boise State then returned home and defeated Memphis 38-20.
That game showed just how dangerous the Broncos can be offensively.
Boise State trailed 17-3 early but responded with 35 unanswered points after halftime to turn the game into a comfortable victory.
The rushing attack was the biggest difference.
The Broncos produced 357 rushing yards.
Dylan Riley rushed for 206 yards on 19 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per carry.
That performance is particularly important for this matchup.
South Dakota has been excellent against FCS competition, but Boise State’s rushing attack is operating at another level of athleticism.
Boise State’s Offensive Formula
Boise State should attack South Dakota on the ground early.
The Broncos have a clear advantage in size and depth along the offensive line.
If they can establish the run, South Dakota will eventually have to bring additional defenders into the box.
That creates opportunities for Madsen and the receiving corps.
Boise State does not need to force anything.
A balanced approach should be enough.
The Broncos can run the ball, use play-action and wait for explosive opportunities.
South Dakota Offense vs. Boise State Defense
This is arguably the most interesting part of the matchup.
South Dakota has averaged 46 points per game through three contests.
Boise State’s defense will face a legitimate challenge.
The Coyotes have several ways to create explosive plays.
Pierre Jr. can break long runs.
Modrzewski can attack vertically.
Bryant has already demonstrated big-play ability.
The Coyotes also have a quarterback who has consistently protected the football while generating touchdowns.
Can South Dakota Move the Football?
Yes.
South Dakota should be capable of producing some offense.
The question is whether it can sustain drives against Boise State’s superior defensive speed.
The Broncos have already faced an elite Oregon offense and a strong Memphis attack.
That experience should help.
Boise State also has the athleticism to close running lanes quickly.
South Dakota’s offense may have success early, particularly if it can use tempo and misdirection.
But sustaining that success for four quarters will be much more difficult.
The First-Down Battle
South Dakota needs to stay ahead of the chains.
The Coyotes cannot afford repeated second-and-long situations.
That would allow Boise State to attack aggressively on third down.
If South Dakota can consistently create manageable third downs, it has enough offensive talent to score.
If the Coyotes repeatedly face third-and-8 or longer, the Broncos should take control.
Boise State Offense vs. South Dakota Defense
This is where the game should begin to separate.
Boise State has already produced 274 total yards against Oregon and then exploded for 578 against Memphis.
The Broncos have shown they can adjust during games.
The Memphis performance was particularly impressive because Boise State overcame a 17-3 deficit.
The Broncos did not panic.
They established the rushing attack and eventually overwhelmed Memphis.
That ability should translate well against South Dakota.
Dylan Riley
Riley is one of the most important players in the matchup.
His 206-yard performance against Memphis demonstrated his explosiveness.
He averaged 10.8 yards per carry and produced multiple explosive runs.
South Dakota cannot allow those types of runs.
If Riley gets into the second level consistently, Boise State could score 40 or more points.
Sire Gaines
Boise State also has Sire Gaines available as another rushing threat.
Gaines scored on an 11-yard run against Memphis and remains an important part of the Broncos’ backfield rotation.
That depth is a problem for South Dakota.
The Coyotes cannot simply focus on one running back.
Boise State can rotate its backs and continue attacking with fresh legs.
Quarterback Matchup
Maddux Madsen vs. Austyn Modrzewski
Both quarterbacks enter the matchup playing good football.
Modrzewski has been extremely efficient through three games.
Against Eastern Washington, he completed 16 of 24 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
That was his third consecutive game with at least 200 passing yards and multiple touchdown passes.
Madsen brings significantly more FBS experience.
He has already played against Oregon and Memphis this season.
Against Oregon, he threw three touchdowns.
Against Memphis, he threw for 221 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score.
The quarterback advantage therefore goes to Boise State.
Modrzewski is playing well, but Madsen has faced stronger defensive competition.
That experience should matter when the game reaches the fourth quarter.
Rushing Attack
The rushing matchup strongly favors Boise State.
South Dakota has an excellent running back in Pierre Jr.
He rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns against Eastern Washington and broke a 72-yard touchdown run.
However, Boise State has been even more explosive.
The Broncos ran for 357 yards against Memphis.
Riley alone had 206.
That is a massive rushing advantage.
Boise State should be able to control the line of scrimmage.
If that happens, South Dakota will eventually have to devote more defenders to stopping the run.
That should open passing lanes for Madsen.
Why the Ground Game Matters
A strong rushing attack accomplishes two things.
First, it creates explosive plays.
Second, it controls the clock.
Boise State can use the running game to shorten the game once it has a lead.
That is particularly useful when laying a large spread.
The Broncos do not need to keep throwing late.
They can run the ball and force South Dakota to make difficult tackles repeatedly.
Passing Game
Boise State’s passing game should benefit from the rushing attack.
South Dakota has to respect Riley, Gaines and the other Boise State backs.
That can create opportunities for Madsen to attack single coverage.
Akeem Wright had four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown against Memphis, including a 37-yard touchdown catch.
Boise State also received production from freshman receiver Rasean Jones against Oregon.
Jones recorded four catches for 76 yards in that game.
The Broncos therefore have enough receiving talent to punish South Dakota if the Coyotes overcommit to the rushing attack.
Defensive Matchup
South Dakota’s defense has been solid through the opening three weeks.
Against Eastern Washington, the Coyotes recorded five sacks.
They also forced two turnovers.
The defense held Eastern Washington to 342 total yards and only 47 rushing yards.
That is impressive.
However, Boise State is a different challenge.
The Broncos’ offensive line and rushing attack are significantly more athletic than the FCS offenses South Dakota has faced.
Boise State’s Defensive Speed
Boise State’s defense should have enough speed to contain South Dakota’s biggest plays.
The Broncos held Memphis scoreless in the second half.
That was a major reason Boise State turned a close game into a 38-20 victory.
South Dakota cannot assume it will be able to maintain its early-season scoring pace.
The Coyotes may score.
But Boise State should be capable of limiting them in the second half.
Turnover Battle
Turnovers could determine whether Boise State covers the large spread.
South Dakota forced two turnovers against Eastern Washington.
That shows the Coyotes can create defensive pressure.
Boise State, however, has also demonstrated the ability to create momentum-changing plays.
Against Memphis, Travis Anderson recorded an interception, while Boen Phelps blocked a field goal. Cam Bates also returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown.
Special teams and turnovers can dramatically alter a game involving a large spread.
South Dakota needs to avoid giving Boise State short fields.
If the Broncos receive two or three extra possessions, the margin could expand quickly.
Home-Field Advantage
Boise State returns home after opening the season on the road at Oregon.
The Broncos then defeated Memphis in their home opener.
Now they get another home game against South Dakota.
That matters.
Albertsons Stadium is one of the more recognizable home environments in college football.
South Dakota is traveling a long distance from Vermillion to Boise.
The Coyotes have not yet played a true road game against an opponent with Boise State’s level of athleticism this season.
The travel and environment could become particularly important late in the game.
Head-to-Head History
Boise State and South Dakota have met only once previously.
That game took place on December 1, 1973.
Boise State won 53-10.
The Broncos therefore hold a 1-0 all-time record against the Coyotes.
That historical matchup has little predictive value for the 2026 game.
The programs are in very different competitive environments today.
Still, the historical result provides one piece of context: this is not the first time Boise State has hosted South Dakota.
Betting Line Analysis
There is not a consistent traditional market line across all available sources at the time of this analysis.
A current power-rating system projects Boise State as a 28.5-point favorite with a 97% projected win probability.
Another simulation gives Boise State a 99% chance to win and projects the Broncos to beat South Dakota 47-11.
Those projections are remarkably consistent regarding the winner.
The real question is whether Boise State wins by enough to cover a large number.
A 28.5-point spread requires Boise State to win by four touchdowns minus a half-point.
That is a significant margin.
South Dakota’s 3-0 start makes the number more interesting.
The Coyotes have scored at least 38 points in every game.
They are not a team that should be expected to completely disappear offensively.
However, Boise State’s advantages in roster depth, speed and home field make a large margin realistic.
Best Bet Against the Spread
Boise State -28.5
The best bet is Boise State -28.5 at the working number.
The primary reason is the Broncos’ rushing attack.
Boise State ran for 357 yards against Memphis.
Riley produced 206 yards himself.
South Dakota has been excellent against the run against its first three opponents, but this is a major step up in competition.
Boise State should eventually create consistent rushing success.
Once that happens, South Dakota will have to commit more defenders to the box.
That should create opportunities for Madsen.
The Broncos can therefore attack South Dakota both horizontally and vertically.
Spread Risk
There are two major risks to Boise State -28.5.
First, South Dakota’s offense is legitimate.
Second, Boise State could become conservative after taking a large lead.
If Boise State leads 38-7 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos have little reason to continue throwing aggressively.
That creates an opportunity for South Dakota to score a late touchdown and reduce the final margin.
That is the primary reason not to chase the spread at a significantly higher number.
At -28.5, however, the Broncos remain the preferred side.
Over/Under Prediction
Over 57.5
The secondary selection is Over 57.5 points.
The projected final score of 47-11 produces 58 points.
That places the projection just above the working total.
The Over has a straightforward path.
Boise State could score 40-plus points by itself.
The Broncos have already scored 38 against Memphis and 27 against Oregon.
Against an FCS opponent, the offense should have opportunities to generate explosive plays.
South Dakota also has enough offensive talent to contribute.
The Coyotes have scored 59, 38 and 41 points in their first three games.
Even if their scoring efficiency declines against Boise State, reaching double digits is realistic.
Why the Over Could Win
The biggest factor is Boise State’s rushing efficiency.
If Riley and the rest of the backfield consistently break long runs, the Broncos could score quickly.
That creates more possessions for South Dakota.
A fast start would be particularly important.
If Boise State scores three touchdowns in the first half, South Dakota will have to become more aggressive offensively.
That could lead to additional points on both sides.
Over Risk
The primary threat to the Over is a slow second half.
If Boise State leads comfortably at halftime, the Broncos may run the ball repeatedly and shorten the game.
South Dakota could also struggle to sustain drives.
That would reduce the number of possessions.
Still, the offensive upside on both sides makes 57.5 a reasonable Over target.
South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction: Key Matchup Factors
1. Boise State’s rushing attack
The Broncos ran for 357 yards against Memphis, including 206 from Dylan Riley.
2. South Dakota’s rushing attack
Charles Pierre Jr. has rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Coyotes’ latest win and has surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards.
3. Quarterback experience
Madsen has already played against Oregon and Memphis this season, while Modrzewski has been highly efficient against FCS opponents.
4. Explosive plays
Both teams have demonstrated the ability to produce long touchdowns.
That makes the Over attractive.
5. Home field
Boise State gets to play at Albertsons Stadium after opening the season on the road.
6. Second-half depth
Boise State’s FBS roster depth should become more noticeable as the game progresses.
Projected Game Script
South Dakota should not be intimidated by Boise State early.
The Coyotes have been aggressive all season.
They should continue to run the football and take shots downfield.
The opening quarter could therefore be competitive.
Boise State may lead 10-7 or 14-7 after the first 15 minutes.
The Broncos should then begin to exploit their physical advantages.
Riley and Gaines should find larger rushing lanes.
Madsen should get more favorable passing opportunities.
By halftime, Boise State could have a two-score lead.
A projected halftime score of approximately 24-10 would put significant pressure on South Dakota.
The Coyotes would then have to throw more frequently.
That would allow Boise State to increase its pass rush.
The third quarter is where the game could become one-sided.
Boise State’s depth should begin to show.
The Broncos could score two touchdowns while South Dakota struggles to maintain long drives.
A 38-10 score entering the fourth quarter would put Boise State firmly in control.
The final quarter should feature more rushing attempts from the Broncos.
South Dakota could find a late touchdown, but Boise State should have enough offense to maintain a comfortable margin.
Projected Score
Boise State 47, South Dakota 11
That produces:
- Boise State margin: 36 points
- Total points: 58
- Boise State touchdowns: 6
- South Dakota touchdowns: 1
The projection supports both the Boise State spread and a slight Over at 57.5.
Why Boise State Can Cover
Boise State has already shown that it can compete against elite FBS competition.
The Broncos lost to Oregon by seven points.
They then responded by defeating Memphis by 18.
That is a strong opening to the season.
The rushing attack is the biggest reason to expect another strong performance.
Boise State produced 357 rushing yards against Memphis.
Riley averaged more than 10 yards per carry.
That type of rushing efficiency is difficult for an FCS opponent to match.
The Broncos also have quarterback experience.
Madsen has played in major environments and has already thrown three touchdown passes in a game this season.
Boise State should therefore have multiple ways to move the football.
Why South Dakota Could Cover
South Dakota is not a typical overmatched FCS team.
The Coyotes are 3-0.
They have scored 138 points.
They have already produced multiple 500-yard offensive performances.
Modrzewski is playing efficiently.
Pierre Jr. is capable of explosive runs.
Bryant has demonstrated big-play ability in the passing game.
The defense also recorded five sacks and forced two turnovers against Eastern Washington.
That combination gives South Dakota a legitimate path to staying competitive.
The Coyotes’ best chance is to create a slow, physical game.
If they can run effectively and keep Boise State’s offense on the sideline, the Broncos may struggle to build an enormous lead.
South Dakota also needs to avoid turnovers.
A clean game would dramatically improve its chances against the spread.
Coaching and Preparation
Boise State has the advantage in preparation because the Broncos are accustomed to playing high-level FBS competition.
They have already faced Oregon and Memphis.
South Dakota has played three FCS opponents.
That does not diminish the Coyotes’ accomplishments.
It simply means Boise State has more experience dealing with the speed and physicality of this level.
South Dakota’s coaching staff will need an excellent game plan.
The Coyotes should avoid trying to match Boise State possession for possession.
Instead, they should focus on efficiency.
Long drives, successful third downs and explosive plays are their best tools.
Special Teams
Special teams could become a major factor.
Boise State already has a special-teams touchdown this season.
Cam Bates returned a punt 72 yards for a score against Memphis.
South Dakota cannot afford to give Boise State easy points.
Field position will also be important.
If Boise State consistently starts drives near midfield, the Broncos could score frequently.
South Dakota needs to win the hidden-yardage battle.

Final South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction
South Dakota enters this game with legitimate momentum.
The Coyotes are 3-0.
They have scored 138 points.
They have produced explosive rushing and passing performances.
Modrzewski has thrown for at least 200 yards and multiple touchdowns in every game, while Pierre Jr. has emerged as a major rushing threat.
That makes South Dakota one of the more dangerous FCS opponents Boise State could face.
However, Boise State has already demonstrated that it can compete against elite FBS competition.
The Broncos went on the road against Oregon and lost by only seven points.
They then returned home and defeated Memphis 38-20 after overcoming a 17-3 deficit.
The biggest takeaway from the Memphis game was the rushing attack.
Boise State ran for 357 yards.
Riley produced 206 yards on only 19 carries.
That level of physical dominance should create problems for South Dakota.
The Coyotes have played excellent defense during their 3-0 start.
They held Eastern Washington to 47 rushing yards and recorded five sacks.
But Boise State’s offensive line and running game represent a major step up in competition.
The Broncos should eventually establish control at the line of scrimmage.
Once Boise State starts running effectively, South Dakota will need to bring additional defenders into the box.
That should create opportunities for Madsen.
The Boise State quarterback has already demonstrated that he can make explosive plays through the air.
The Broncos also have enough receiving talent to punish an aggressive defense.
Home field adds another advantage.
South Dakota is traveling from South Dakota to Boise for the longest road trip of its season.
The Coyotes will also face a much different environment than the one they experienced during their first three games.
That could matter as the game progresses.
The latest projections are heavily aligned in Boise State’s direction.
One power-rating system lists the Broncos as a 28.5-point favorite with a 97% projected win probability.
Another model gives Boise State a 99% chance to win and projects a 47-11 final.
Those projections support Boise State as the clear winner.
The spread is the more interesting question.
South Dakota is good enough to score.
That creates some danger for Boise State bettors because a late touchdown could reduce the margin.
Still, the Broncos should have enough offensive firepower to create a four-touchdown advantage.
Boise State’s rushing attack is the deciding factor.
The Broncos should be able to run efficiently enough to control the game while simultaneously creating explosive plays.
The projected total also points toward a competitive Over.
South Dakota has scored at least 38 points in every game.
Boise State has scored 27 against Oregon and 38 against Memphis.
If the Broncos reach the mid-40s, South Dakota only needs to contribute around 12 to 14 points for the total to clear 57.5.
The projected score of 47-11 lands at 58 points.
That makes Over 57.5 the preferred secondary selection.
The most likely game script is a competitive first quarter followed by Boise State separation.
South Dakota should have some success early.
The Coyotes’ offense is too talented to expect a complete shutdown.
But Boise State’s defensive speed should improve as the game progresses.
On offense, the Broncos should lean on Riley and the rest of their rushing attack.
By the second half, the depth advantage should become increasingly noticeable.
Boise State should pull away and win comfortably.
Final Prediction: Boise State 47, South Dakota 11
Best Bet: Boise State -28.5
Secondary Bet: Over 57.5
The strongest South Dakota at Boise State Betting Prediction is Boise State to control the line of scrimmage, generate explosive rushing plays and pull away for a convincing home victory.
