Western Conference Finals Showcase Elite NBA Talent and Unique Star Power

A tall, lanky unicorn of a player who can move like a guard and shoot lights out from long range is one of the players that will be featured in the 2026 Western Conference Finals. Another player is an explosive point guard who was drafted fourth overall in his class and is a threat to score a triple-double on any given night. Finally, there is a left-handed, six-foot-five guard who is drafted in the top three of his class and comes off the bench but immediately makes an impact when he steps foot on the court. Was it the Oklahoma Thunder from 2012 that we just described, or was it the San Antonio Spurs in their most recent iteration?

There is no denying that the Spurs of 2026 are not identical to the Thunder of 2012. On the other hand, it shouldn’t be too strange to observe the types of players that NBA general managers seek (for example, height and length, athleticism, work ethic, basketball IQ, and so on). Despite the fact that Stephon Castle is more like DJ Catnip than Michael Corleone, if you try to convince me that Victor Wembanyama is not Sonny Corleone by pointing out that he threw them sharp elbows in the final round, then you should not bother reading my modernized version of the Godfather fan fiction in which Google Maps takes Sonny on a faster, alternate route and he avoids the tollbooth massacre.

Taking all of this into consideration, it can be stated that clubs, and at least good front offices, tend to gravitate toward particular types of players and types of roster configurations. In the instance of both the Spurs and the Thunder of the 2000s (I’m thinking about that one right now; it’s not the best), the Spurs have a better record than the Thunder. They gravitated toward a generational centerpiece player who forced mismatches based on his very distinctive physical build and offensive skill set. This player was a product of the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. Life was simpler when we could just say those are the decades. Next, it felt like the most logical thing to do to match this rainbow unicorn with a point guard who is capable of getting him the ball and being their own scoring option when those situations arise. There is a nice coincidence that both the Spurs and the Thunder have in common: the rising star who comes off the bench and happens to be left-handed. The fact that we are not living in a mirror universe that is created to anger large market NBA clubs like the Lakers and the Knicks means that all bets are off if Dylan Harper appears in the upcoming season with a full-on lumberjack beard.

If nothing else, I hope that this is the point when the similarities end. The historic breakup of the big three in Oklahoma City reads like a Greek tragedy related to the National Basketball Association in terms of “what could have been.” It’s true that they came across the Heatles, but what if Harden had never committed to playing for the Rockets? What if Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook decided to put their differences behind them and instead focused on eliminating more teams from the playoffs? You may observe the different kinds of teams that the Spurs have faced, defeated, or lost to by watching every incarnation of the Spurs, from the 1999 Twin Towers to the 2014 Beautiful Game/Foreign Legion. Durant, Westbrook, and Harden Thunder were among the most terrifying of those teams. The task of protecting them was a nightmare that I’m sure kept a lot of head coaches up at night from worrying about it. There was a primal shout of delight, relief, and sports exorcism that I let out when Kawhi Leonard snatched the ball away from Russell Westbrook, who was screaming down the lane, in the waning stages of overtime in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals in 2014. In the same way that Michael could not exact retribution on the other mafia families without first experiencing the betrayal of his own family (looking at you, Salvatore Tessio), revenge against the Miami Heat is contingent upon getting through this terrifying Thunder team.

A word of caution: the San Antonio Spurs are currently in their first year of existence. They are currently deadlocked 1-1 with the Oklahoma Thunder, who are the reigning champions of the 2025 NBA season, as of the time of this article. Although the series is already and will continue to be remarkable, it does not appear that this will be the only time that these two teams compete against one another. They are the underdogs, just like their counterparts from the Thunder in the mirror universe in 2014. It is possible that the aspects surrounding the key characters will shift, but based on what we have witnessed from both teams up to this point, it is clear that the Spurs and the Thunder are destined to compete against each other once more. It is not a coincidence that two of the smallest market clubs have been continuously ranking at the top. Ping-ponging your luck in the lottery is a really helpful strategy. Castle’s slip to fourth place is a significant help. However, the behavior of teams when particular basketball players are available to them is a crucial factor in determining the level of success they achieve.

In order to develop the ideal product that we see on the court, it is necessary for both nature (player skills and talents, draft lottery position) and nurture (club culture, front office) to come together in the very best possible way. It was a different time back then, even though 2012 doesn’t seem that far away (oh my goodness, it’s been 14 years!). It seems that today, thanks to social media, we have greater access to the thoughts, opinions, and sentiments of players than we did back then. Because “clickbait” and “engagement farming” were not as prominent as they are today, it is possible that the animosity that existed between the Thunder’s big three was clear to teammates and other individuals around the team. However, we were not as conscious of it. In the end, a player might just desire more money, a different setting, or to be the main character on his own team… all of these are acceptable reasons to leave a team. Perhaps it was all a nothing burger in the sense that the tension was inconsequential because of this.

The majority of us are (with a healthy dose of cautious optimism) certain that these players will remain together for a considerable amount of time. This is because we are aware of how the Spurs function and because we have witnessed what this current Spurs team is capable of doing. In addition, as a person who is a fan of De’Aaron Fox, I would want to emphasize that this post is not an attempt to erase De’Aaron Fox. We are observing the impact that his absence has on the team since his presence would undoubtedly assist in reducing turnovers, stabilizing the offense, providing another body to match the amazing depth of the Thunder, and helping the Spurs to be the closer that they require. Fox has reached the age of 28. In the world of basketball, he is on his own individual quest. In the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, he was the captain of the Sacramento Kings, a defiant and entertaining squad that faced off against the Golden State Warriors. Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Warriors in Game 7. Now he is on the same train as these young Spurs, who are seeking to earn a spot in the NBA Finals to compete in the championship game. The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to be the most significant impediment, despite the fact that this team has already out-kicked its coverage in terms of postseason expectations due to the fact that there are still difficulties such as Fox and Harper’s health.

The greater the degree to which things change, the more they continue to be the same. In other words, that is a direct quote from CatRat. Taking my word for it and not bothering to check my facts is something you can do if your daughter, who is six years old, does not force you to watch Gabby’s Dollhouse.
