Cody Williams, a student at Colorado, has had life-changing experiences in basketball gyms all over the country.

Many of his earliest memories of the game happened in gyms. He trained with his older brother Jalen Williams, who went from being an undrafted prospect to one of the rising stars in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He also met his current college coach, Tad Boyle, for the first time at his high school gym in Gilbert, Arizona, which was a place he knew well. And lately, his draft stock has gone through the roof thanks to his play in college halls across the country.

This is one reason Williams is seen as one of the top options to be picked first overall in the 2024 NBA Draft this summer.

If everything goes as planned, he could make even more memories next month in more crowded stadiums during March Madness and become a well-known figure.

Cody Williams Top NBA Draft Pick: Following His Older Brother

Cody knew from a very young age that he could always count on his brother to help him and play a tough game of 1-on-1. They had a basketball dream, so Ron and Nicole Williams often worked late to pay for it. Jalen took care of Cody while they worked.

Because they were four years apart in age, Cody could watch his brother go through the recruiting and pick processes. Williams Sr. was a three-star prospect and played for three years at Santa Clara before entering the 2022 NBA Draft.Williams shot up the draft boards in the days before the big night, and the Thunder picked him 12th overall.

“Being the younger brother, (I) kinda had to follow in his footsteps in terms of going to all of his practices because my parents were working late. The most important thing was to be with him at the gym all the time and learn from him. He was kicking my behind all through my childhood. I got my way of thinking from him because he wasn’t hired as much as he should have been.” Cody said.

The brothers Williams are about to do something historic. As brothers picked in the first round of the NBA Draft, they could become part of an exclusive group. The Thompson brothers, Amen and Ausar, were the first siblings to be picked in the top 10 of the same draft last year. Cody and Jalen are expected to follow suit.

“That made us closer and gave me a chance to teach him there,” Jalen Williams said. We’ve been working out together for a long time and doing a lot of the same things I was. That’s why I think he has a head start on a lot of it. … It was also a lot of fun for us. We have a lot of good memories of losing our parents on the basketball court and having to wait for them to pick us up for hours.

They might work together in OKC. It’s not fully impossible. Sam Presti, the Thunder’s general manager, has made many deals over the years that have given them a treasure trove of first-round picks for years to come. It doesn’t look like any of the picks will fall in the range where Williams is mocked, but that doesn’t mean they can’t move up and pair them up.

“We always used to joke that the one way we would be able to play on the same team is if we were in the NBA,” Cody said. It’s something we’ve said since I was about 8 years old and he was 11 or 12 years old. That might be possible after all. We’re sorry we haven’t been able to play together, but we hope to soon.

Aspirations come true for both of us as we compete at the top level and do something we love. It would be even better if you could do that together. Without a doubt, I say playing together, since we never got to do that. If you could do that at the top level, I would choose to play with you instead of against you.

Jalen would also be okay with the pair.

“It would be really cool to play with him (in the NBA). He may have said this already: We’ve never been on the same team.” He knows that I’m open to anything. Both of us are rivals. Whether you play with or without each other, it would be cool. Being on the same team would be really cool.” Jalen said.

Williams Chooses Colorado

William Williams was the first five-star prospect to ever sign with Colorado when he did so in November 2022. Williams passed former four-star center Lawson Lovering to become the highest-ranked Colorado signee.

Before Boyle came to see him in person at Perry High School in the spring of 2022, he had already began his trip to Colorado. Boyle saw Williams work out at his high school gym during that conversation. At the end of the visit, the longtime coach made it clear that Williams was Colorado’s top goal for the next round of recruiting.

“I tried to explain (to Cody) the concept of a poker player going all-in on his hand. I told you I was all in on you. You are without a doubt the most important thing. We want you as a guy. It turned out okay. I believe that hit home with him.” Boyle said.

The coach made a good case. A few months after that first meeting, Williams chose Colorado over Texas, USC, Arizona, LSU, and UCLA. Others joined late in the process of recruiting him, but Boyle and Colorado were able to keep their top choice because they had built a bond with him during the process.

“My family always kept me together.Never think that something is free. Always volunteering at food shelters and doing any kind of community service over the holidays just so they could show us how valuable what we have is. That’s kind of what they taught us, and that’s kind of why I chose Colorado—coach Boyle has the same values here on the team. That’s the standard he expects of us.” Cody Williams said.

Williams is Considered Can’t-Miss Prospect

There are a lot of open spots at the top of the 2024 NBA Draft. There are probably at least six guys who could be considered for the first pick.

Even though the draft isn’t clear and there isn’t a “generational talent” like Victor Wembanyama did last year, Boyle is still sure of where his star rookie fits in the rankings.

“He’s as close to a can’t-miss prospect as I’ve seen in a long time. Because of everything I’ve said. How humble he is, how hard he works, how much he loves the game.” Boyle said.

Williams is 6 feet 8 inches tall, which makes him the perfect big man wing player who can also handle the ball. He is the best example of a modern NBA player, which is why draft picks like him are so valuable. From high school to college, he got better at shooting 3-pointers and now makes an impressive 45.7% of his tries.

Williams shoots 59% of the time and averages 13.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. His length and size make him a great option to become one of the best defenders at the next level, which is what he wants to do when he gets to the league.

“I think one of the best things about me is how versatile I am,” Cody Williams said. “The important thing is that I can guard different positions on the court and play different positions.” I think I have what it takes to be a great defender.

He made some steps from high school to college while he was with his bigger brother in the gym. Williams often took the plane from Colorado to Arizona last summer to train with Jalen before each of their seasons began.

His bigger brother saw how determined he was to get to the NBA and improve his game during those summer workouts in Arizona.

“Just how good he’s been the last two years. He’s obviously very talented, but the level of dedication he showed in his workouts was a turning point. He wanted to see what I was doing while I worked out, so he would drop what he was doing to work out with me. … I knew he was serious when I saw him try to play like a pro and take care of his body like a pro over the summer. I also think that because of all the things that can go wrong, you can’t really tell if someone can make it to the NBA. But the way he worked made me think that he did have the tools and the drive to do what he’s doing now.” Jalen Williams said.

Now is a long time ago. The 2024 NBA Draft will take place in June at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Williams still needs to finish his season and decide if he wants to enter the draft. If Williams does what everyone thinks he will do, he will have another chance to make history, this time at an NBA gym, which is where his bigger brother started his NBA career.
