NBA All-Star Game: A Lot Points Scored, No Defense

NBA All-Star Game: A Lot Points Scored, No Defense

The NBA All-Star Game took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024, and here is how it all went down.

For years now, the NBA has been using team captains and an untimed, targeted scoring system to find the winner of the All-Star Game.

Needless to say, this format wasn’t that well appreciated, and that forced the league to go old school.

For this edition, the NBA All-Star Game reverted to its traditional format of 4, 12-minute quarters of East vs West.

And it was an asserted decision, with the game finishing with an outstanding score of 211-186.

Yes, you read that right, the East managed to score an impressive 211 points, and yet, Commissioner Adam Silver wasn’t impressed.

Why?

It was a 3-point fest with no defense, and Silver mentioned, “To the Eastern Conference All-Stars, well, you scored the most points. Congratulations.”

NBA All-Star Game: How The Game Went

Here is information on how the NBA All-Star Game went.

Damian Lillard was declared 3-point champion on Saturday, and the next day he managed to score 39 points vs the West and received the MVP honors.

In total, this weekend, Lillard made a total of 57 3’s.

Contrasting with Silver’s declarations, Lillard was more positive about the outcome of the game, although he did mention that he believes there’s room for improvement by stating, “I think people who are fans of the game, they love it. They enjoy being entertained, and I think it could be more competitive.”

NBA All-Star Game Records

Now we have information on the NBA All-Star Game records.

Now, Lillard was MVP, but the top scorer of the game was Karl-Anthony Towns, who finished the game with 50 points in 35 shots, and that total allowed KAT to be tied for the 3rd-highest scoring game in the history of the NBA All-Star Game.

It was also the highest number of points scored by a player who didn’t end up winning MVP.

Even KAT was impressed by his accomplishment by stating, “I just wanted to cherish this moment and make the most of it. I didn’t know it was going to be 50!”

The two squads also managed to set NBA All-Star Game records for total points in a game with 397, and for most points in a half with 193. Also for most 3’s made, with a total of 67, and the total of 3’s attempted, with 167.

The East also managed to set a record for points scored by a team and tied a record for points scored in the first half with a total of 104 points.

Not Done Before

Not just fans watching the game were impressed by all that was taking place on Sunday night, but also the players themselves, with guys like Jalen Brunson ( an All-Star for the first time) stating that “It’s never been done before, and that was a goal of ours to do, I’m glad we did.”

Other Scorers

Not only KAT and Lillard were playing at their best on Sunday, but most of the players that hit the court also did their respective jobs.

Jaylen Brown scored 36 points off the bench, and mentioned that before the game, players were trying to figure out if they wanted to play hard, mentioning that “I guess guys are trying to figure out how to have fun, be safe, and be injury free.”

Tyrese Haliburton, the local hero, finished with 32 points, despite nursing a sore hamstring. Due to the lack of defense displayed by the two squads, he thought the game was a bit easy, mentioning that “obviously it wasn’t high intensity at all.”

LeBron James played 14 minutes and scored only 8 points in the first half, missing the second. Now, we have to consider the fact that this is the 20th time Bron has played the NBA All-Star Game, so just by participating he was already making history.

“This is very humbling, very blessed, and it’s something I will never forget, obviously. It’s part of my journey.” James said.
