New York Jets Brief History
The Jets were born back in 1959 as an AFL team, and their name back then was the Titans of New York, with the name being chosen because “Titans are bigger and stronger than Giants.”
By 1962, the team was in serious debt, and about to sign for bankruptcy, but a 5-man syndicate led by Sonny Werblin acquired the franchise for $1 million and renamed it the New York Jets (a name related to the closeness of Shea Stadium with LaGuardia Airport).
Although the Jets haven’t won any NFL super bowls, the Joe Namath-led Jets were able to defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, getting their first and only AFL league title.
After the merger took place, the team became mediocre as an injured Namath wasn’t able to lead them to anything important during their first NFL seasons. The franchise then enjoyed some successes during the eighties but continued on a downward spiral afterward.
The team continued to struggle during the ’90s, with coaches such as Pete Carroll and Rich Kotite leading the team to continue losing seasons. But the good times started to roll back for the Jets in 1997 when the franchise hired Bill Parcells, who managed to help NY to make it to the AFC Championship Game the following year.
But soon after, the team found itself plagued by injuries, and this led Parcells to resign. Parcells left Bill Belichick as the head coach, but Belichick resigned to the position just a day after, accepting the same position at the Patriots.
New York Jets Team Rivalries
The Jets hold rivalries with four NFL teams: The Patriots, the Bills, the Dolphins, and the Giants.
New England Patriots
This is a rivalry that was born in the early days of the league, but it intensified in 1966, when the Jets defeated the Pats 38-28, leaving them out of Super Bowl I. New England, however, returned the favor in 1985, when the Patriots eliminated New York 24-14 at the playoffs, allowing the Pats to make it to Super Bowl XX, where they got defeated by the Chicago Bears.
1997 is actually a key year for this rivalry. And the reason is that this is when Bill Parcells decided to quit his position with New England to take as the head coach for the Jets.
The very next year, the New York franchise stole another key asset from the Pats: they signed Pro Bowl running back Curtis Martin. After the decline of the team during the third year of Parcells as head coach, the latter decided to resign from his position.
And, the rivalry got very heated the very same day as Parcells resignation, as his assistant, Bill Belichick, decided to decline an invitation to stay as NY’s HC, taking as the HC for the Pats.
Buffalo Bills
This is a rivalry that’s based on locality as both franchises represent the state of New York. And the rivalry actually represents the very differences between New York City, and Western New York, the area where Buffalo plays. The rivalry has enjoyed a few highlights, but it has been generally characterized by mediocre and uncompetitive games.
Miami Dolphins
This is also a very old rivalry, dating back to 1966. One of the top games between these two teams took place back in 1994 when the Miami franchise ran the Fake Spike play, which gave the team a win that seems very unlikely.
And the Jets also had a magical night back in 2000, in what is now known as the Monday Night Miracle, where the Jets, who were trailing the Fins 30-7 at the end of the third quarter, managed to come from behind to get an overtime win.
