Buffalo Bills Brief History

The Bills are one of the original AFL teams and was born in 1960. The team joined the NFL after the merger of the AFL and the NFL for the 1970 season. With the help of coach Lou Saban and quarterback Jack Kemp, Buffalo was able to get two straight AFL titles in 1964 and 1965. After the merger of the AFL and the NFL, the team became quite mediocre during the 1970s, despite featuring All-Pro running back OJ Simpson.

The late 1980s through the mid-1990s became a better period for the franchise as they counted on an accomplished quarterback in Jim Kelly, and also with players like Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas. This was the time when they were able to win four straight AFC titles, but this was also a time of disappointment as they lost all four subsequent Super Bowl games. Then, the Bills entered into an extensive stagnation period, as they weren’t able to reach the playoffs for 17 straight seasons.

An interesting fact about this team is that they are the only ones to have won four consecutive conference titles, and are also the only NFL franchise to lose 4 straight Super Bowl games. And, they also possessed a not-so-positive record as they weren’t able to qualify for the playoffs from 1999 until 2017. The name of the team originated out of a contest to rename the AAC Bisons, and the winning entry was “Bills”, in honor of western frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody. The team colors are royal blue, red, white, and navy blue.

Buffalo Bills Team Rivalries

The rivalries of the Bills are mainly against other AFC East opponents: The Dolphins, the Patriots, and the Jets. Enjoy the best live NFL gambling lines at HRwager, including the best Buffalo Bills Betting Odds.

Miami Dolphins

This is the most famous rivalry for this team. Both teams had their start at the AFL, but the rivalry was born during the seventies, when the Miami franchise was able to win all of its games against the Bills, for a total of 20 straight victories over Buffalo. The good moments started rolling back again for the Bills with the arrival of quarterback Jim Kelly, who enjoyed a competitive rivalry with Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino during the 1980s and 1990s. Things have kind of cooled down a little bit between the two franchises, but they definitely remain rivals to this day.

New England Patriots

This is a rivalry that began when these two teams were still part of the AFL. With that said, after the rise of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, the Pats have fully dominated the AFC East, and are 29-5 against Buffalo since Belichick took on as head coach. If you ask fans of the Bills, they will tell you that New England is their most hated rival.

New York Jets

This is a rivalry that was born when both franchises belonged to the AFL. The rivalry is based on locality, but it’s not as strong as the previews rivalries mentioned here, and fan bases of these teams don’t hate each other too much. Actually, the games between these teams are frequently ugly and mediocre, with a few exceptions, especially when Rex Ryan assumed as the head coach for the Jets for two seasons.
