New England Patriots Brief History
The team was founded back in 1959 as one of the founding AFL members. The Patriots found themselves struggling for most of their time as an AFL team, not even being able to find a regular home stadium. They appeared in just one AFC title game, losing to the Chargers 51-10 back in 1963.
The franchise wasn’t able to make any other playoff appearances for another 13 seasons after this. Once the NFL and AFL merger took place in 1970, the team became part of the AFC East division, where they still play today. The Patriot’s name refers to the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies who rebelled against the British Empire during the American Revolution.
The team enjoyed some successes during the seventies, making it to the postseason in 1976 and 1978; first as a wild card team, and then as AFC East champs. Sadly, they lost in the first round both times. In 1985, the Pats were able to advance all the way to Super Bowl XX, losing to the Bears 46-10. They returned to the playoffs the following season but were again ejected during the first round.
The team wasn’t able to make the postseason for 8 seasons after this, even finishing with a terrible 1-15 regular-season record in 1990. Bill Parcells took over as the head coach of the Patriots in 1993, and he managed to lead them to two playoff appearances, including Super Bowl XXXI, which they lost to the Packers 35-21. Then, his successor, Pete Carroll, was also able to take the franchise to two consecutive postseason appearances in 1997 and 1998, before getting dismissed in 1999.
The Arrival Of Bill Belichick And Tom Brady
After letting Carroll go, the team hired Bill Belichick, who had been a defensive coordinator under Parcells’s command. And the team was not only getting a new coach, as Gillette Stadium became their official new home field in 2002. 2002 was also the year when Tom Brady arrived on the team.
After getting drafted as a sixth-round pick (Brady is considered the biggest steal in the history of the NFL draft), it took Brady just one single season to assume the starting quarterback role. With this new stadium, a new starting quarterback was on the rise, and under Belichick, the team was able to win 3 Super Bowls in four seasons (2001, 2003, and 2004).
Then, in 2007, the team finished the regular season unbeaten with a 16-0 record, and they almost matched the Dolphins as the only two teams to have gotten Super Bowl titles with undefeated records, but they lost that final game to the Giants.
Still, they became just one of three teams, along with the 49ers and the Bears, to have gotten 18-1 records. The Pats returned to the Super Bowl in 2012 but were again dismissed by the Giants. Then, in 2015 they defeated the Seahawks at Super Bowl XLIX, acquiring their fourth league title.
They came up with a brand new title after defeating the Falcons at the only Super Bowl in history to have gone to overtime. The team made it back to the championship game for the 2017-18 season but lost Super Bowl LII to the Eagles. And then, they reached Super Bowl LIII, beating the Rams 13-3, and getting their sixth NFL title, tying the Steelers for the most championships in the history of the league.
