Cleveland Browns Brief History

This franchise was born in 1945 as part of the All-America Football Conference. The Browns were the dominant team at the AAFC, finishing with a 47-4-3 record in four seasons, and getting the title each and every year. Then, in 1950, when the AAFC was dismantled, the Browns joined the NFL, along with the original Baltimore Colts, and the 49ers.

This team is actually the first to win the inaugural NFL title, and they also obtained the 1954, 1955, and 1964 titles. And, they also played the championship game during the team’s first 10 years of existence. In 1995, owner Art Modell moved the original Browns franchise to Baltimore but switched the name of the team to the Ravens.

This allowed the city of Cleveland to acquire an expansion team and name it the Browns, all while retaining the team’s intellectual property, such as its name, logos, training facilities, and history. With that said, the team remained suspended for a few years, until 1999, when an actual expansion team was announced for the city.

And, since the team resumed operations, they have struggled to find the success of years past. In fact, they have had just two winning seasons in 2002 and 2007, including a playoff appearance in 2002, but no playoff victories. The franchise is also famous now because they’ve had problems finding a stable quarterback, having started 30 players in this position since 1999.

Cleveland Browns Team Rivalries

The Browns hold rivalries with all of its three AFC North opponents. Plus, the team also holds rivalries with the Colts, the Broncos, the Bills, and the Lions.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Known as the “Turnpike Rivalry”, this is the team that’s considered as the Browns’ long-time foes. Even former Browns owner Art Modell was known for scheduling home games versus the Steelers on Saturday night to fuel the rivalry. The teams have faced each other twice a year since 1950, making this one the oldest rivalry in the AFC, and the fifth oldest in the NFL.

Cleveland was the dominant team early in the series, holding a 31-9 record during the ’50s and ’60s. But then the Steelers became the top team during the seventies, posting a 15-5 record during that time. And they are 34-6-1 since the Browns returned to the league back in 1999.

Cincinnati Bengals

“The Battle of Ohio” as this rivalry is known, has been fueled year after year by sociocultural differences between Cleveland and Cincinnati. And, after the AFL-NFL merger, owner Art Modell even moved the Browns to the AFC to hold a rivalry with the Bengals. This rivalry has also produced two of the top-scoring matches in the history of the National Football League. Now, the Bengals have the all-time edge, with a 50-41 record, and they are also 26-14 since the return of the Browns in 1999.
