Detroit Lions Betting: How to Bet on this Team

Now on this Detroit Lions Betting page, let’s check out the different ways in which you can place a bet on this team:

Moneyline

The moneyline is the simplest bet, and it is decided by who wins and who loses each game outright. Take a look at the following:

Lions +140
Falcons -105

The Lions are the underdogs in this game, which is shown by the number +140. A $100 bet on the Lions would pay out $240 ($140 in winnings) for a total of $240. The Falcons are the favorite in this game. You have to bet $105 to win $100 if you bet on them (plus the initial bet back). Moneyline bets always pay out the same amount, no matter how much either team wins or loses.

Point spread

The number of points a team wins or loses by is based on how many points people bet on the point spread. Take a look at the following:

Lions +6.5 (-110)
Rams -6.5 (-110)

In this case, Detroit is a 6.5-point underdog, which is shown by “+6.5.” If the Lions keep the game within seven points or win outright, say 27-24, then the Lions (+6.5) win the bet and a $10 bet pays out $19.09 ($9.09 profit). If the Rams win by seven points or more, like 31-17, the Rams (-6.5) would win, and the payout would be the same as shown above.

Point total (over/under)

The over/under line is what the point total is referring to. This number predicts the total number of points scored in a game, and like prop betting, people bet on whether they think the score will go over or under the set point total. For example, 51.5 points were predicted for the Lions’ Week 4 game against the New Orleans Saints. The final score was 35–29, which means that both teams scored 66 points. Those who bet more than the number of points that week would have won.

The Lions had the worst scoring defense in the NFL, giving up 32,4 points per game. If they had a better defense, they would have scored more points. But the fact that they could score on offense kept the numbers from getting too crazy (23.6 points per game was 20th). Both ended up scoring about the same number of points, which depended on who the Lions were playing. In 2020, the average number of points was between 45 and 50.

Detroit Lions Brief History

The team began playing professional football back in 1928 when they were known as the Portsmouth Spartans. But in 1934, they moved to Detroit after it was clear that it was tough for an NFL team to survive in Portsmouth, the smallest professional football market at the time. They were re-baptized as the Lions. And the team’s first season was quite successful as they won 10 games in a row. The following year, the Lions managed to make it to its first NFL Championship game, where they played the Giants.

Detroit went on to win this game, beating New York 26-7, earning themselves their first World Championship. This was a glorious time not only for the local football team, but for the local baseball and hockey teams, as well as the Tigers, who captured the 1935 World Series, and the Red Wings were able to win the Stanley Cup the following season. The Lions have won a total of four NFL titles, but their last one was acquired back in 1957. This gives this franchise the second-longest title drought in the NFL, just behind the Cardinals.

Detroit Lions Team Rivalries

This franchise has been part of different divisions, which has led them to have different divisional rivals.

Divisional Rivals

Their oldest rivals, and which are still part of the same division, are the Bears and the Packers, all of which have been part of a division containing these teams since 1933. The Vikings are the newest divisional foes and have been holding a rivalry with Detroit since their league inception back in 1961.

Other long-time rivals were:
  • The Cleveland/LA Rams, whom they frequently faced from 1937 until 1966
  • The Bucs, whom they played from 1977 until 2001 on a regular basis
  • The 49ers, whom they played from 1950 until 1966
  • The Cardinals, whom they played from 1933 until 1949
  • The Baltimore Colts, whom they played from 1953 until 1966

Cleveland Browns

The team also features a preseason rivalry with the Browns, whom they’ve been playing for the “Barge Trophy” since 2002. These two franchises also had a solid rivalry during the 50s, meeting a total of four times for the NFL title, with the Lions winning 3 of these meetings. They’ve been meeting less and less during the regular season since the merger of the AFL and the NFL as the Browns were moved to the AFC.
