When Will the Red Sox Play Their Next Meaningful Game at Fenway Park?
Having suffered their second consecutive defeat at the hands of the Washington Nationals, who are becoming increasingly unlikable, the Boston Red Sox took the right step of flying west into the setting sun to start their nine-game road trip yesterday. There is a great deal of uncertainty over their future, and their season is either on the verge of failure or has already passed away, depending on who you ask.
The trade deadline is still a month away (Monday, August 3rd at 6:00pm), but because of a scheduling quirk and the All Star Break, there is now only one homestand left for the Red Sox before we get there (July 17th through the 26th against everybody in the AL East other than the Yankees). This is because the Red Sox have a homestand against every team in the AL East other than the Yankees. As a result of this, I am curious about the timing of the next significant baseball game that will take place at Fenway Park.
That it will be their very next game there on July 17th, coming out of the All Star Break, is something you might say if you want to be extremely optimistic about the situation. They would still be close enough to smell the third Wild Card entering that crucial stretch, and it would very much be “game on” considering how terrible the American League is this year and the probability of some major names becoming available in the near future. If the Sox were to pull off a road trip with a record of 7-2, they would still be in the running for the Wild Card.
On the other hand, if you are willing to be extremely gloomy, you could argue that the next game at Fenway Park that is of any significance will not take place for another two years. Let’s say the Boston Red Sox go on a road trip to the west coast and end up with a record of something like 2-7. Then, as soon as they return from the break, they sell parts, which formally puts an end to their chances of winning the championship in 2026, and then they plunge headfirst into a debilitating lockout that eliminates the entire 2027 season.
It is kind of surprising that I don’t have to strain my eyes too much to see either extreme, but I think the real answer is probably something that falls somewhere in the middle.
