JJ Wetherholt and Jordan Walker were not considered to be among the finest players in Major League Baseball by anyone. I had a feeling that Wetherholt would be rather good, but not quite as amazing as this. It is my belief that no one was aware of the level of defensive range he brought or the calmness he displayed while he was at the plate. Personally, I don’t think I did.
According to Chaim Bloom and the Cardinals, Jordan Walker is the albatross that is causing a lot of controversy regarding their genuine intentions. Despite the fact that he has been giving a significant amount of run creation dynamics, he was not expected to be thus for real now. Assuming that he was not a factor, I presume that the plans would be different.
Taking into account the 2026 versions of JJ Wetherholt and Jordan Walker, the Cardinals position players are currently ranked among the top five teams in Major League Baseball. The only teams that are ahead of them are the Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, and Nationals. To get to that total fWAR, the Cardinals spent a lot more money than the other teams, with the exception of the Nationals (maybe?). One of the ten clubs who have produced at least ten field goals against average (fWAR) on the position side is the Cardinals.

Fangraphs reveals that the Cardinals have one of the few team defenses in Major League Baseball that has a net positive rating. This may come as a surprise to some. The Cardinals are not a liability due to their defense, yet they are just outside of the top five. The majority of the reason for this is that the middle infielders and center fielders are able to counteract the rest of the team, but altogether, it is an excellent run prevent defense.
Is it possible that this positional player advantage is deceptive in some way? Is it possible that the team’s xwOBA can provide us with some insight? According to baseball savant, the Cardinals are the third best team in Major League Baseball right now! It’s possible that this offensive is just beginning to make sense.
Having said that, this is a team that is playing offense forward and has a defense that is strong enough to make the pitching a little bit better than it is. For this club, the big question is whether or not the pitching can genuinely develop to the point where it can carry them ahead. At a time when it appears that the offense is just starting to realize its full potential, the pitching staff is not showing any signs of encouragement. When one considers that the organization appears to have disregarded the pitching at least to some degree, it is almost miraculous that the club is performing so well. The pitching appears to have been neglected. In addition, if they were to trade Dustin May, they would be losing one of the few focal points of the season in terms of the pitching staff. Since he has been flirting with no-hitters this year, he has been the center of attention to everyone.
