Ion Cutelaba vs Navajo Stirling Prediction – UFC Vegas 119 Predictions

Ion Cutelaba (20-11-1, 1NC) is the ideal light-heavyweight journeyman, a decade-long veteran with a penchant for explosions. His resume boasts decent names – an early KO of Khalil Rountree before he broke into the elite, plus wins over Tanner Boser, Ivan Erslan, Ibo Aslan, and most recently a first-round submission of the prospect Oumar Sy. He’s been cracked more than once. His chin is dubious. He’s lost to good fighters and bad fighters. He’s more measured these days, picking at range with leg kicks and altering levels, and he’s good in the clinch and on top, but his finishing almost always comes early.

Navajo Stirling (9-0) is one of the brightest light heavyweight prospects on the squad, a City Kickboxing product riding the division’s second longest win run behind only colleague Carlos Ulberg. The Kiwi has made his career on a kickboxing background and is a technically neat, defensively responsible striker who mixes well to the body and head, and unleashes switch kicks with tremendous conviction. His last fight saw him get his first UFC stoppage, beating Bruno Lopes in a third consecutive decision. He’s showed the strength to overturn clinch positions against bigger, stronger guys.

Both fighters have the same opponent in Ivan Erslan, whom they have both beaten on the cards: Cutelaba by split decision and Stirling more convincingly. The career paths of the two men, however, are more disparate, one an ageing finisher whose best days are behind him, the other a soaring potential still on the up and yet to hit his ceiling.

Cutelaba’s sole viable option is to get the early KO. He has finished almost every UFC opponent in the first and after that his power and pace fall off a cliff. The problem is that Stirling has demonstrated he can take heavy shots and stay composed, and he’s far too well-rounded on the mat to be submitted by a grappler of Cutelaba’s caliber. Even Cutelaba’s arsenal of trips from the clinch and top control on the ground runs into Stirling’s demonstrated ability to reverse position and work back up.

If “The Hulk” can’t get the bomb down in the first round, this is a long night for him. The length, volume and poise of Stirling should see him comfortably outstrike Cutelaba and bank rounds. The veteran’s chin and gas tank both fade as the battle carries on. Stirling might not have the one shot finish but the volume is there to break down a weary veteran in the second half. Give me the Kiwi to make the halt in the last two rounds. Stirling to win is a no brainer.
