Rico Verhoeven Plans Appeal After Controversial Stoppage Loss to Oleksandr Usyk
In response to Oleksandr Usyk’s stoppage loss, Rico Verhoeven has stated that he will file an appeal.
On Saturday, Verhoeven appeared to be on the verge of causing one of the most significant upsets in the history of boxing. The fight took place in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, which is widely considered to be one of the most unusual sites ever. The Glory kickboxing champion battled in his very first professional boxing match, which was a crossover fight against Usyk, who is widely considered to be the best heavyweight champion of the current generation.
Right up until Round 11, it seemed as though Verhoeven had the upper hand in the fight. It was at that moment that Usyk appeared and pushed Verhoeven aside. Following the successful completion of the count, Usyk continued to unleash a barrage of attacks until the final round, lighting up Verhoeven with punches that were delivered against the ropes. After only one round had been completed, the referee intervened and ruled that the fight should be stopped.
Verhoeven quickly voiced his disapproval of the stoppage, and after receiving feedback regarding the event, he has the impression that he was treated unfairly and plans to present a formal appeal of the decision.
In an interview with Boxing News, Verhoeven stated, “I just saw the end because of all the comments I was reading, and they stopped the fight after the bell.” Therefore, the bell rang, and after that, they put an end to the conflict. Due to the fact that this is completely illogical, I believe that we should just go ahead and file an appeal as soon as possible. That is, if the bell rings, and then you put an end to the combat – why is that the case? After that, it is time for me to take a break. My score was eight out of ten. The score was a solid eight count. In spite of the fact that it was necessary, I had the impression that because I heard the click, we had around 10 seconds left. Let us simply continue to walk around, keep our hands raised, and try to catch the shots. I have the impression that I was acting in such manner. In my opinion, this is the reason why I did not feel awestruck or anything else when the referee entered the situation. While I was looking at the referee, I asked him, “Why are you stopping everything?” This is getting really close. So, I couldn’t understand what you were saying. In retrospect, even the bell didn’t make it through the ordeal. This is something that he ought to be aware of by now. Undoubtedly, it is possible for errors to occur; nonetheless, when one considers the situation in retrospect, the referee ought to acknowledge that he made a mistake. We are either going to go to the scorecards or end up with a no contest. I believe that if we make use of the scorecards, I was in the lead.
Although a significant number of people were watching the fight from their homes, and even though Mike Coppinger’s unofficial scorecard from the broadcast indicated that Verhoeven was in a commanding lead, the official ringside judges believed that the fight was much closer.
At the beginning of Round 11, two of the official judges announced that the fight was deadlocked, while another judge predicted that Verhoeven would win by just one round. Consequently, in the event that Verhoeven’s appeal causes the fight to be contested until Round 11, which would have resulted in a score of 10-8 for Usyk owing to the knockdown, the outcome would still be a victory for Usyk by majority decision.
In spite of the fact that he was dissatisfied with the result, Verhoeven was able to identify some positive aspects of his performance. As a result of his position as a large underdog going into the bout, many people believed that the match would not even be remotely competitive. Verhoeven highlighted his delight in being a part of the fight within a message that he posted on Instagram. “Everything in life happens for a reason, People change so you can learn to let go,” Verhoeven wrote. In order to learn to appreciate things when they are right, it is necessary for things to go wrong. Also, in order for better things to come together, it is necessary for good things to go wrong. It is a fact that history was created.
