Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting: How to Bet on this Team

Now on this Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting page, let’s check out the different ways in which you can place a bet on this team:

The moneyline is the simplest wager, with the winners and losers of each game determined straight up. Think about the following instance:

  • Patriots +190
  • Bucs -145

With the Buccaneers listed as strong spread favorites (-145), $100 must be wagered in order to win $145. (plus the initial bet back). In this game, the Patriots are the underdog, paying out $290 overall for a $100 wager ($190 in winners). Moneyline wagers pay paid regardless of how much one team wins or loses; the amount is fixed.

Point Spread

How many points a team wins or loses by depends on the point spread bet. Consider the following instance:

Ravens +2.5 (-110)
Bucs -2.5 (-110)

As can be seen by the “-2.5” sign, Tampa Bay is favored by 2.5 points. If the Bucs prevail 31-27, the Bucs (-2.5) win the wager, earning a total payoff of $19.09 ($9.09 profit) on a $10 wager. The Ravens (+2.5) would triumph and receive the same reward even if they kept the game close but lost 33-31.

Point total (over/under)

The point total is the over/under limit established by the books. Similar to prop betting, this wager is made on whether one believes the final score will be over or under the predetermined point total. For instance, the expected point total for the Buccaneers’ Week 8 game against the New York Giants was 49.5 points. The final score was 25–23 in favor of Tampa Bay, for a total of 48 points. Those who placed wagers below the point total would have won money.

Along having one of the top defenses in the NFL, the Buccaneers had one of the most potent scoring offenses. After Week 5, Tampa Bay’s offense hit its groove, averaging 32.9 points per game, and its games had over/unders that were higher than the league average, usually between 49 and 54 points. However, the opponent’s offense and its capacity for scoring greatly influenced that mark.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Brief History

The team was born back in 1976 as an expansion franchise, joining the NFL the very same year as the Seattle Seahawks. The Bucs started their run at the NFL as part of the AFC West, but after the first season, the team switched positions with the Seahawks and became part of the NFC Central division.

And, after the 2002 league realignment, the franchise became officially part of the NFC South, along with three other former members of the NFC West. The team started with very poor records, losing its first 26 matches in 1976 and 1977. And it was until Week 13 in 1977 that they managed to acquire their first franchise victory.

They then experienced a brief winning era in the late seventies and early eighties. But then their performance sank, and they suffered through fourteen losing seasons. Later on, things improved, and for a decade, they were considered playoff contenders, until 2002, when they managed to defeat the Raiders 48 to 21, winning Super Bowl XXXVII. They have not returned to the Super Bowl since then.

Buccaneers Super Bowl XXXVII Victory

By 2001, the Bucs were in search of a new coach, and they wanted their next one to possess an offensive mindset. And just when they were ready to hire Steve Mariucci, they made a late move for Jon Gruden. The move was costly for the Bucs, as they had to give four draft picks, including their first and second-round picks of 2002, plus $8 million in cash, to the Raiders, in exchange for the services of Gruden.

This trade was also significant because the league prohibited the trading of draft picks for coaches after this event happened. After getting officially hired, Gruden went to work immediately, switching 50% of the team’s offensive lineup. The irony is that the Bucs wanted a top offensive team, but they actually ended up with the top defense in the league.

Later on in the season, Tampa Bay managed to eliminate the Eagles, a team that had eliminated the Bucs in each of the last two season’s wild card matches. Tampa Bay entered this match as the top underdogs, and they actually fell behind in the score early in the game. But they persevered and managed to seal the 27-10 victory. The Bucs then played Gruden’s former team, the Raiders, the team with the top offense in the league, at the championship game, but it was Gruden’s new team the one that managed to win the Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Rivalries

The top rivals for the Buccaneers are the Saints, their NFC South foes.

New Orleans Saints

These teams first met back in 1977, but this rivalry really didn’t fully develop until both franchises became direct rivals in the NFC South back in 2002. This has resulted in two annual meetings between the franchises. As of now, it’s the Saints that lead the overall series 33-20. These two have not played each other in the postseason yet.
