Best NFL Players of All Time: Jonathan Ogden
With one of the best defensive teams in NFL history, the Baltimore Ravens became the 2000 champions. The offense was basically a bystander since they were Ray Lewis’s squad. It was the offense’s responsibility to not make mistakes while Trent Dilfer filled the quarterback position—someone had to do it.
Jonathan Ogden, a left tackle, did not receive the assignment. With the fourth overall choice in 1996, the 6-foot-9, 340-pound player was a perfectionist and craftsman. He was an excellent run blocker who picked up pass blocking in the NFL fast. A four-time All-Pro choice, he played in eleven Pro Bowls.
Many people referred to Ogden as the best offensive player in Ravens history after his career ended after the 2007 season. Regarding his overall value to the Ravens, some have drawn comparisons between him and Ray Lewis.
In addition to being a vital member of the squad, he had a significant role in encouraging spectators and the general public to pay greater attention to events that occurred near the line of scrimmage. Throughout Ogden’s tenure, the Ravens’ offensive woes were evident, but Ogden continued to play at an almost flawless level the more the team attempted to improve the passing game and fell short of that objective. NFL Films’ cameras frequently focused on what
In the trenches, Ogden did. His performance standards put offensive linemen across the league under strain.
Despite being one of the all-time greats due to his constant performance, Ogden never pursued fame or fortune for himself. He works as a lineman. Ogden’s offensive linemate on the Ravens, Orlando Brown, said of him, “He’s real humble; he’s not in it for the fame.” The camera doesn’t search for us, even though we want to be in it for the fame. Because he was always performing his work at such a high level, the camera was always focused on him.
The left tackle turned into a star while Ogden was on the field. Regardless of who was running the ball or throwing it for them, he became such a force in every game that the Ravens fans began to search for him.
It is astounding to consider where the Ravens offense would have ended up in his absence. Ogden nearly single-handedly oversaw the Ravens’ offensive success. He might have had his greatest season in 2003. With quarterbacks like Chris Redman, Anthony Wright, and Kyle Boller, the 10-6 Ravens qualified for the playoffs last season. Only three of the Ravens’ games that season saw them gain more than 200 passing yards, while four of them saw them gain less than 100 yards.
Despite the fact that opponents threw for 550 yards more than the Ravens that season, Jamal Lewis’ 2,066 yards of rushing helped Baltimore get to the postseason. He mostly accomplished it by trailing Ogden. Despite the offense’s complete predictability and defiance of the notion that a team must throw the ball in order to win, the Ravens managed to succeed.
It always served as a warning to his opponents to have Ogden on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Joey Porter, a linebacker with the Miami Dolphins, stated that Jonathan is among the greatest players who have ever played the position. “He always forced me to play to the best of my abilities or he would make me look foolish.”
The coaching staff of the Ravens and general manager Ozzie Newsome, who drafted Ogden in 1996, were aware of his consistency. The Hall of Fame tight end Newsome said, “I have been a lucky man to have played with and against some of the best players who have ever taken the field in the NFL.” In my role as an executive for this squad, I have also had the opportunity to observe some of the greatest players in history. I can honestly state that Jonathan Ogden has always performed the best of any player I have ever seen on the field. No matter the player’s identity or position, Jonathan consistently produced the best work.
“Watching him dominate week in and week out while watching game films on Mondays after our games was something that always made you feel good.” When we selected Jonathan in the 1996 draft, we had many needs, but he was the best player available, so we took him. He was a dividend payer to us for many years.
Orlando Pace of the St. Louis Rams and Tony Boselli of the Jacksonville Jaguars presented Ogden with fierce competition when he was at his best. Though knee ailments limited Boselli’s window of maximum effectiveness, he might have given Ogden genuine challenge. At his best, Pace was almost as brilliant as those two, but following the 2004 season, he appeared to decline significantly. Although it was not one of his best seasons, Pace would make his seventh Pro Bowl in 2005 because to his reputation helping him get on the team.
Ogden believed he could not live up to his own expectations, therefore he made the decision to quit after 12 seasons. “Although I never intended to brag about myself and tell everyone how amazing I was, I will admit that when the Ravens selected me, I accomplished my goals,” Ogden stated. “I feel good about the way I performed and I feel like I did my job as professionally as possible.”
