Carolina Panthers Brief History
The Panthers were announced in 1993 as the 29th franchise in the NFL. And their first official season was back in 1995. They performed well during their first two seasons, ending with a 7-9 record in 1995, being this an all-time best for an expansion team during its first-ever NFL season.
They improved the following year, finishing with 12 victories and just 4 losses, and this result allowed them to clinch their first title, winning the NFC West. But then things went a little south for the Panthers as they didn’t enjoy another positive season until 2003 when they were able to obtain the NFC Conference title after defeating the Eagles 14-3.
This gave the team its first-ever ticket for the league title game, but they fell 29-32 to the Patriots at Super Bowl XXXVIII. The team went on to win four more divisional titles, until 2015 when they managed to acquire their second-ever NFC conference title.
They did this by defeating the Seahawks 31-24 at the divisional playoffs, to then play the cardinals at the conference game, getting a 49-15 victory. This allowed them to play for the league title once again, but they fell at Super Bowl 50 to the Broncos by a score of 24-10.
Carolina Panthers Team Rivalries
The team holds heated rivalries with its three NFC South foes, the Falcons, the Buccaneers, and the Saints. And they also have a more recent rivalry with the Seahawks.
Divisional Rivalries
Out of their three divisional rivalries, the most intense ones are versus the Bucs and the Falcons. Atlanta is a natural geographic rival for this franchise. And both teams have played each other twice every year since the Panthers’ inception.
When it comes to the Bucs, many describe this one as the most intense rivalry in this division. The rivalry was born in 2002 when the NFC South was formed, but it acquired intensity the following year when a lot of verbal abuse was exchanged between the players from both franchises.
Seattle Seahawks
This is a relatively new rivalry, born in 2005, after the NFC title game, which Seattle won 31-14. The rivalry heated up even more in 2012 when Carolina lost another close regular season match to the Seahawks by 16 to 12. From there on, the teams have gone on to play very tight games, and it is Seattle that leads this series 9 victories to 4 for the Panthers.
