Atlanta Falcons Brief History

The team was born in 1965 as an expansion team for the NFL. The Dan Reeves era has proven to be one of the most successful times for this franchise.

Reeves entered the Falcons as their head coach back in 1998. And with the help of the also recently acquired quarterback Chris Chandler and running back Jamal Anderson, the team was able to acquire its first-ever conference championship. This title was acquired after defeating the top-seeded Vikings 30-27.

And this victory gave Atlanta its first ticket for a league championship game, but they fell to the Broncos 34-19 at Super Bowl XXXIII.

The second most successful season for the Falcons came in 2016 when they obtained their second-ever NFC championship title. This was their last season in the Georgia Dome, and they started with a loss in Week 1 to the Bucs. But they soon recovered their trust and were able to win their next four in a row.

Then, a victory over the Panthers in Week 16 gave them their first NFC South title since 2012. They won their last regular-season game against the Saints and finished with an 11-5 record. The team then defeated the Packers 44-21, obtaining the NFC conference title.

Atlanta Falcons Team Rivalries

The Falcons currently hold rivalries with their divisional foes, the Saints and the Panthers.

New Orleans Saints

Every single season, except for their first, the Falcons have shared the same division with the Saints. They were first foes at the NFC West, and now at the NFC South. And, a heated rivalry has been growing for years between these two franchises as these were the only two NFL teams in the Deep South for a long time. This is definitely the oldest and most iconic rivalry in the NFC South. As of now, the Falcons are the ones that lead the series 52-48.

Carolina Panthers

Additionally, the Falcons also share a rivalry with the Panthers, although this one is smaller than the one with the Saints. Both teams used to play at the NFC West, and they continue to play against the other in the NFC South. Right now, the Falcons also lead this series with a 27-11 record.
