MLB Proposes 154 Game Season and Major Playoff Changes

The MLB 154 game season proposal could reshape both the summer schedule and October. The league has proposed shortening the regular season beginning in 2029, adding a regular weekly off day, and expanding the Division Series to seven games. The changes remain part of negotiations with the players’ union.

Another proposed wrinkle would allow leading seeds to choose postseason opponents. Together, the ideas ask a larger question: how much of baseball’s familiar calendar should change to improve the product?

Fewer regular season games create tradeoffs

A shorter schedule could give players more recovery time and make off days easier to anticipate. It would also remove dates that fans, local businesses, and clubs currently build around. The benefit depends on how the entire calendar works, rather than the number alone.

A longer Division Series would give teams more chances to recover from one bad night. It could also put more emphasis on pitching depth and create additional high-profile games. Whether that produces a better championship test is a worthwhile debate.

Choosing an opponent would create immediate drama

An opponent selection would turn a competitive calculation into a public statement. The chosen club would have an obvious motivational storyline, while the selecting team would have to defend its decision if the series went badly.

No proposal is an approved rule simply because it generates attention. The next meaningful step is agreement. Until then, fans can debate the possibilities while recognizing that baseball’s current format remains the starting point.
