Saints’ Quarterback Chaos: Pursuit of Tua, Carr Leaves, Arch Awaits

Saints' Quarterback Chaos Pursuit of Tua, Carr Leaves, Arch Awaits

The New Orleans Saints‘ pursuit of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was described as “bold and unexpected.”

Although Tua Tagovailoa’s sale of his Miami house was a possible indication that the team would be regretting its injury-plagued quarterback, the move may be a year early.

Fortunately, Derek Carr is no longer employed by the company. By saving them $30 million on the restructuring for the next season, he benefited the Saints. With Tua’s guaranteed money for 2026 being $54 million, New Orleans’ cap space might be worth $54.6 million, and the Saints could afford it.

There is still a chance that Arch Manning’s tank train goes awry and someone like Cleveland ends up with the number one pick, even if Patrick McAvoy of SI.com called a deal this year “bold and implausible.”

He did pose a question that merits discussion:

“Why just turn around and do something like this after selecting Shough with the team’s highest overall pick for a quarterback since Archie Manning?”

They didn’t know that Carr wouldn’t be their guy to start the season, so they selected Tyler Shough as his backup. The fact that Tyler was the most NFL-ready but not a starter puts them in this predicament.

The Saints would have approached the NFL draft differently if they had known Carr wouldn’t start the season because of his shoulder.

The main factor influencing whether the Saints and Miami would reach an agreement is whether Tua sustains another injury, which I anticipate he will this season. If Arch Manning doesn’t end up in the Saints’ lap, that is.
