New York Giants agree to terms with QB Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson, the quarterback who won a Super Bowl, agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Giants that may total up to $21 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.
The 10-time Pro Bowl pick is choosing New York, where he won Super Bowl XLVIII in MetLife Stadium while playing for the Seattle Seahawks. He has been in talks with the Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wilson said Tuesday night that he is thrilled to be back in his new role as the Giants’ projected starting quarterback.
According to individuals who spoke to Schefter, Wilson’s contract with the Giants rules out Aaron Rodgers playing in New York this season.
If the quarterback decides he wants to play this season, it also puts Rodgers and Wilson’s old team, the Steelers, in a position to negotiate their own deal.
Wilson was added a few days after the Giants reached an agreement with Jameis Winston. They now have Wilson, Winston, and Tommy DeVito in their quarterback room.
Last Monday, Winston, a veteran, agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with the team. His contract said that it was more of a backup arrangement. Holdover DeVito played in 12 games for the team throughout the previous two seasons.
The Giants could still select a quarterback in the NFL draft next month even if Wilson, 36, ends up signing. Owner John Mara stated at the conclusion of the previous season that finding a quarterback of the future was the team’s “No. 1 issue” and top priority. New York now has the No. 3 pick. DeVito, Wilson, and Winston don’t have long-term contracts.
Wilson’s decision to join the Giants makes sense, as he expressed interest in moving to New York at the beginning of the offseason.
Wilson was also thought to have arranged a meeting with the Giants during the previous offseason. However, the Giants declined to give him the starting position the previous season. They were determined to give Daniel Jones another opportunity. Wilson ended up in Pittsburgh instead, and Jones started the season as the Giants’ starting quarterback but was benched and cut before the end of the season.
Last offseason, Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers on the brink of free agency. He went 6-1 in his first seven starts and eventually supplanted Justin Fields as Pittsburgh’s starter in Week 7, despite being sidelined by a persistent calf ailment during training camp and the first six weeks of the season.
Wilson and the Steelers completed the 2024 season on a five-game losing run, despite their early success. During that span, he took 18 sacks, tossed just six touchdown passes, and turned the ball over four times. Wilson, the starting quarterback, concluded the season with a 6-5 record with 16 touchdown passes against five interceptions. He was sacked 33 times and completed 63.7% of his passes.
Wilson played for the Denver Broncos for two seasons before to last season in Pittsburgh. The Broncos acquired Wilson in a huge trade with the Seahawks and signed him to a five-year, $242.6 million contract. However, Wilson was fired by the Broncos last March even though his contract had more than $85 million in dead money after his departure, and the team only finished 11-19 during his tenure and missed the playoffs.
In 2022, Wilson arrived in Denver after the Broncos traded the quarterback to the Seahawks for three players and five draft picks, including two first-round picks.
Wilson completed two touchdown passes in Seattle’s Super Bowl XLVIII victory while playing for the Seahawks for his first ten years. Over a 13-year career, he has amassed 46,135 passing yards, a completion percentage of 64.7% (3,882 for 6,001), and 350 touchdown passes to 111 interceptions.
