College Football Week 13 Winners and Losers: How the conference races stack up heading into the final week of the regular season

Week 13 was undoubtedly unpredictable.

As a result of the four losses by the top-15 teams on Saturday, the College Football Playoff picture substantially changed. The day began with a rout of No. 5 Indiana at No. 2 Ohio State. Subsequently, a four-way tie for the Big 12 title was established, and the SEC competition was reduced to three teams.

Alabama, Ole Miss, and Tennessee were all eliminated from the SEC title race. The Crimson Tide, ranked seventh, suffered a 24-3 loss at Oklahoma, just hours after the No. 9 Ole Miss team suffered a 24-17 loss at Florida.Tennessee secured a victory over UTEP and maintains the potential to finish 6-2 in the conference; however, the tiebreakers are not favorable to the Vols.

Georgia secured a place in the conference title game despite placing fourth among the conference’s teams in the College Football Playoff rankings at the beginning of the weekend, as a result of the SEC’s chaos. The Bulldogs conceded a significant number of rushing yards to UMass in their victory on Saturday. However, they concluded their SEC schedule with a 31-17 victory over Tennessee a week prior.

The following is a summary of the conference races as they approach the final week of the regular season.

  • Army vs. Tulane

We’ve known about this game for two weeks. Now let’s go.

  • SMU vs. Clemson or Miami

After beating Wake Forest 42–14 at home on Saturday, the Hurricanes are likely to win at Syracuse. With a 33–7 win at Virginia, SMU locked up a spot in the ACC title game. Quarterback Kevin Jennings completed 25 of 33 passes for 323 yards.

  • Oregon vs. Ohio State, Indiana or Penn State

Following their win over Wisconsin in Week 12, the Ducks had a week off in Week 13. They were then ready to play in the Big Ten title game. With a win over Michigan, Ohio State needs only to beat Michigan to make it to the title game. Ohio State could lose, which would give Penn State a chance to beat Maryland. After beating Minnesota 26–25 on Saturday, the Nittany Lions got away. If Ohio State and Penn State both lose, Indiana will play Purdue in the championship game.

  • Two of Arizona State, BYU, Iowa State, Colorado, Baylor, Kansas State, and Texas Tech

This is where things get messy. First, let’s look at a simple case. One game separates ASU, BYU, ISU, and Colorado at the top of the league standings. If there is a tie at 7-2, Arizona State and Iowa State will play in the league title game.

To make it to the title game, Colorado needs two of the three teams it is tied with to lose. This is because both Kansas State and Kansas lost. ASU and BYU have already beaten K-State, and in Week 14, Iowa State will play the Wildcats. Each of the four teams tied for first place needs to lose in Week 14 for Baylor and Texas Tech to win. It’s necessary for Kansas State to beat Iowa State, for all three teams tied with Kansas to lose, and for Baylor to lose to Kansas.

  • Jacksonville State vs. Liberty or Sam Houston or Western Kentucky

This is also pretty easy to understand. After beating Sam Houston, Jacksonville State locked up a spot in the title game. The Bearkats are now tied with Liberty after the Flames beat Western Kentucky. In Week 14, Liberty plays Sam Houston. Liberty is in if it wins. They will be in if Sam Houston wins and Western Kentucky wins. Sam Houston is in with a win and a loss for WKU.

  • Two of Miami (OH), Ohio and Bowling Green

All three teams have the same record: 6-1. On Saturday, Miami and Bowling Green will play each other. That team that beats Ball State will play Ohio in the next round. The Falcons and Redhawks will play again a week later if Ohio loses to Ball State and Bowling Green beats Miami. This is because Miami beat Ohio earlier in the season.

  • Boise State vs. Colorado State or UNLV

With a 17–13 win at Wyoming, the Broncos secured their spot in the title game. After Colorado State’s loss to Fresno State, UNLV is just one win away. Utah State will be in if they beat Nevada in Week 14. Utah State should lose and Colorado State should win.

  • Georgia vs. Texas or Texas A&M

The race for the SEC title became a lot easier after three top-15 teams lost on Saturday. Now that Alabama and Ole Miss have three conference losses, they are out of the running for the SEC title. Tennessee is also out of the running, even though the Vols still have a chance to finish the season 6-2.

Texas A&M’s home game against Texas is now the SEC semifinal because Auburn beat them. The winner will go up against the Bulldogs.

  • Louisiana vs. Marshall or Georgia Southern

With a 51–30 win over Troy, the Ragin’ Cajuns won the Sun Belt West. If Marshall beats James Madison, they will win the East. Georgia Southern is in the title game because they beat Marshall 24–23 earlier this season. If Marshall loses and Appalachian State wins, the Eagles will be there.

Here are the rest of the winners and losers for this week.

  • Florida: The fights between the Gators have not stopped. After beating No. 9 Ole Miss on Saturday, Florida pretty much has a 7-5 record for the season. The Florida pass rush did a great job against Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. They also had two late picks that sealed the 24–17 win. First-year quarterback DJ Lagway completed 10 out of 17 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Montrell Johnson played a big role in the game.
  • If you missed any of these this week, here they are.
  • Kansas: With their 37-21 win over No. 16 Colorado, the Jayhawks became the first team with a losing record to beat three straight ranked teams. Devin Neal, the running back, ran for more than 200 yards and four scores, and Kansas never punted. Kansas is now 5-6, and if they beat Baylor in the last week of the regular season, they will be able to go to a bowl game.
  • Nebraska: The run of bad luck is over. For the first time since 2016, Nebraska is going to a bowl game. The Huskers beat Wisconsin 44–25 to finally get into a bowl game. Nebraska had not won in ten games after its fifth win of the season. That change came on Saturday. Nebraska scored 20 straight points in the second and third quarters to take a big lead. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola completed 28 out of 38 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown.
  • Oregon State: The Beavers won the Pac-12 title. After beating Washington State 41–38 at home, Oregon State was able to claim the title of conference champion. The Cougars have lost two games in a row. A week ago, they lost to New Mexico. With 2:45 left, Ben Gulbranson threw a touchdown pass of 4 yards to Darrius Clemons to tie the game at 38–38. The drive lasted 16 plays and gained 75 yards. The next time Washington State had the ball, they lost a fumble on the second play. With 20 seconds left, Everett Hayes made a 55-yard field goal that won the game.
  • Rutgers: Greg Schiano will remember how the game ended on Saturday for a very long time. Ohio State was ahead 31–30 when Illinois lined up for a 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds left. Schiano had called a timeout before the play, so the kick went wide and short. Illinois coach Bret Bielema chose to go for it on fourth-and-10 because the kick was so close to going in. That worked out great because Luke Altmyer found Pat Bryant over the middle. Bryant ran to the end zone and scored the go-ahead touchdown with four seconds left to give the Illini a 38–31 win.
  • Pitt: The Panthers lost their fourth straight game on Saturday, 37-9 at Louisville. Quarterback Eli Holstein may be out for the season after this loss. Holstein was taken off the field in a cart with a boot on his left lower leg after being sacked in the first quarter. At halfway, the Cardinals were ahead 27–0, and in the second half, they were easy to beat. After Holstein threw for 51 yards on just five tries, Pitt’s offense could only muster 265 yards. In Week 14, the Panthers need to beat Boston College in order to avoid losing their last five games of the season.
  • NC State: In the last minute of Thursday’s game against Georgia Tech, Daylan “Hollywood” Smothers ran 53 yards for a touchdown, putting the Wolfpack almost bowl-eligible. NC State was ahead 29–23 after Smothers’ touchdown, but Georgia Tech scored the game-winning touchdown after just seven plays. With 22 seconds left, quarterback Aaron Philo ran for 18 yards and scored a touchdown. Aidan Birr’s extra point was the winning score, 30–29. The loss brought NC State’s overall record to 5-6 and its ACC record to 2-5. Its last game of the season is a rivalry game against North Carolina.
  • Kent State: It looks like the Golden Flashes will have a terrible season (0-12). Akron came to Kent State on Tuesday night with a 2-8 record. It looked like KSU’s best chance to win in over a year. Instead, Akron easily beat Kent State 38–17, making their losing streak longer. Since beating FCS team Central Connecticut State on September 16, 2023, the Golden Flashes have not won. So far, Kent State has lost 20 straight games, and their last win over an FBS team was in the last week of the 2022 season.
