The New Mexico State Fair Grounds include The Downs at Albuquerque. There are 310 slot and video poker machines at the 8,000 square foot casino at The Downs, as the establishment is often known. The Fair Commission abandoned its plan to hold a competitive bidding process for the management of the Downs at Albuquerque early in 2003. Later that year, the Fair Commission would have been able to lease the Downs operator for up to 25 years, but the language allowing for that possibility was vetoed by the state governor.
In 2004, the Downs took up the project of reconstructing the horse barn at the Fairgrounds.
