On June 20, 1996, Emerald Downs opened its doors to the public for the first time, and the first 100-day meet was held there until November 4, when it was officially closed. It took the place of Longacres Racetrack, which had been in operation for sixty seasons prior to its closure in September of 1992. Between the years 1993 and 1995, Western Washington did not host any horse racing events since Longacres had been shut down. On the other hand, thoroughbred racing continued to take place at Yakima Meadows and Playfair Race Course in Spokane during this time duration.

The dazzling establishment is located on 167 acres, close to the north of the downtown area of Auburn, which is approximately 20 miles southeast of Seattle. There are no obstructions to the views of the track and Mount Rainier from the Grandstand, which is six floors tall, 250,000 square feet in size, and 330 feet in length. The horse population is housed in 11 barns, each of which has 116 stalls, which are located in the barn area, which is located to the north of the Grandstand. A one-mile oval track with a six-and-a-half-furlong and a one-quarter-mile chute is what the track is. During the backstretch, the width of the track measures 80 feet, while during the homestretch, it measures 90 feet. In terms of length, the stretch measures 1,033 feet in length.
