Located in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, Delta Downs Racetrack, Casino and Hotel is an American thoroughbred and quarter horse racetrack that has been in operation since 1973. Following Hurricane Rita’s devastation in 2005, Delta Downs has undergone extensive reconstruction and rehabilitation, and it is currently thriving.
Delta Downs History
Directed by Lee Berwick, the tune debuted in September 1973. Berwick had previously hosted races on his farm in St. Joseph, Louisiana, therefore his main goal was to find a reputable venue to run Quarter Horses. Both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets were hosted by Delta Downs in Vinton, with a mixed format in some years.
The track was purchased by entrepreneur Shawn Scott for $10 million in the 1990s. Soon after, a statute permitting slot machines at Delta Downs was approved, and it was sold to Boyd Gaming for more than $100 million. Boyd Gaming invested roughly $120 million in capital renovations following the acquisition.
Hurricane Rita severely damaged the casino, hotel, and track in 2005; two months later, the casino and hotel partially reopened. Following the hurricane, the track was closed for around six months. The level of racing at Delta Downs has increased because to the money generated by the slots casino. In recent years, the winter Thoroughbred meeting has produced a number of stakes-caliber horses.
The oval track measures six furlongs (1.2 km). Together with a five-furlong (1 km) and one and a sixteen-mile Thoroughbred chute, there is a 550 yard (0.50 km) Quarter-Horse chute. The track surface is composed of a base of limestone and a mixture of sand and clay from the Sabine River. There is stabling at the track for 1,200 horses. From the entrance, one can see horse pastures on the Delta Downs property. Thoroughbreds, miniature, and draft horses are on exhibit. As of 2011, Malcom Chiasson’s Quarter Horse Red River Rebel retains the track record and is the top money-winning Quarter Horse in Louisiana.
Due to limitations imposed by state legislation, the racino exclusively offers slots; the casino contains more than 1,600 slot machines. The hotel comprises 36 suites and 203 rooms.
The track typically hosts races from November to mid-July; the Quarter Horse meet starts in April, while the Thoroughbred meet starts in November. The Grade III, $750,000 Delta Jackpot Stakes for 2-year-olds is held at Delta Downs. The Grade III, $500,000 Delta Princess Stakes for 2-year-old fillies is the other significant stake.
