Cal Expo Raceway History

The state’s lone harness racing track is located at the California Exposition and State Fair grounds in Sacramento, or Cal Expo Raceway as it is more well known. Situated next to the American River, the fair grounds span an area of approximately 356 acres.

Harness racing at Cal Expo usually takes place in January through July and in September/October through December. Capitol Racing is the company that runs harness racing at Cal Expo. At Cal Expo, around 900 horses compete.

Every year, in August or September, Cal Expo hosts the California State Fair. During the fair, thoroughbred, quarter horse, and Arabian horse racing takes place on the grounds. The Governor’s Handicap, Earlene McCabe Derby, CA State Fair Open Mule Challenge, Straight From The Gate Futurity, The Jack Clifford, and The Hazel Lucas Stakes are among the special stakes races held in conjunction with the State Fair.
