There is a horse racing track in Arizona that is called as Arizona Downs, and it is located in the city of Prescott Valley. Not only does the track host thoroughbred racing, but it also hosts quarter horse racing too. The track, which was once known as Yavapai Downs, has not hosted any races since the year 2010, but on May 24, 2019, it will once again serve as a site for live racing.
Arizona Downs History
Following the USDA’s decision to reject an earlier bid of $3.25 Million, Gary Miller, a resident of Scottsdale, purchased the property in 2013 for the astounding price of $5.5 Million. Despite the fact that the Yavapai Downs horse racing track never resumed operations, the newly renamed PV Speedway opened its doors for the 2014 regular season.
Between the middle of 2014 and the end of 2014, Miller relisted the home for sale with an asking price of $7.45 Million. Miller’s efforts to sell the land were unsuccessful, and in March of 2015, he filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, which resulted in the cessation of all operations at the property.
J&J Enterprises, LLC paid $3.22 million to acquire the facility in 2017. The transaction took place in the bankruptcy court in 2018. It was reported on June 20 that the facility would reopen under the new name of Arizona Downs, with the intention of resuming live racing in the summer of 2019, as well as simulcasting competitions later in the summer.
By opening off track betting shops in Flagstaff, Lake Havasu City, and two OTB sites in Phoenix, Arizona Downs has effectively increased its presence in the state of Arizona.
