Indianapolis Colts Brief History

In 1953, the city of Baltimore earned the right to create a brand new NFL franchise, and so the Colts were born. The team struggled during its first years, acquiring its first winning season until 1957.

And by 1958, they were already a competitive franchise, thanks to the leadership of coach Weeb Ewbank, and Johnny Unitas, leading the team to a 9-3 record that year, and getting their first title after defeating the Giants 23-17 at the NFL Championship Game.

And, after a few decades in Baltimore, the team was struggling both in terms of achievements and local government support. And so this led to a team relocation to Indianapolis, where the Colts played their first official game in 1984. That year the team went 4-12, and they combined for a low 8 wins during the following two seasons, including a 0-13 start in 1986.

But things took a turn for the better when running back Eric Dickerson became part of the team in 1987, allowing the franchise to finish with a 9-6 record that year, winning the AFC East, and advancing to the playoffs for the first time since the franchise moved to Indy.

But it was until 1998 that the Colts actually became a top team in the league, and that is thanks to Peyton Manning, the son of another legendary quarterback in Archie Manning. Manning was acquired as the first overall pick in that year’s draft, and the player and the Colts struggled during Manning’s first season. The first year as their starter, the team finished with just 3 wins, and Manning ended up with 28 interceptions.

By 1999, the team was starting to take shape, finishing the season with a 13-3 record, but losing to the Titans at the divisional playoffs. The Colts began 2005 undefeated at 9-0, and they accomplished the same feat the following year. But in 2006, they actually earned themselves a trip to Super Bowl XLI, the first championship game for the franchise since 1970.

The Colts ended up getting the title after defeating the Bears 29-17, allowing Manning and his teammates to acquire their first Super Bowl, as well as earning the first one for the city of Indy. The team enjoyed some sweet moments again when Andrew Luck became part of the team. But Luck was not able to lead the franchise to a title, and on August 24, 2019, he announced his retirement.

New England Patriots

One of the team’s top rivalries is with the Patriots, and that is because of the continuous comparison between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. At first, New England owned the series, handing Indy six straight defeats, including a 2003 AFC title game, and a 2004 AFC Divisional game.
