In Stanton, Delaware, there’s a casino, a golf course, and an American horse racing track called Delaware Park, or DelPark. It is located just outside of Wilmington, around thirty miles from Philadelphia.
Delaware Park History
Delaware Park Racetrack was conceived and constructed by William duPont, Jr., a racing course architect who collaborated with Donald P. Ross. The architectural engineer that was employed was Phillip T. Harris from Media, PA. As of right now, the establishment—which began on June 26, 1937—is Delaware’s only thoroughbred horse racing track. Races take place between April and November.
Due to rising casino earnings, race purses have surged recently. The average 2005 payout at DelPark, which was $30,650, was higher than the $20,762 national average for horse racing in the United States in 2005. This helped draw more experienced racers as well as more talented contenders to the facility for the 2005 and 2006 racing seasons. Delaware was ranked sixth in the US in terms of average purse for races contested at DelPark in 2005; New York held the top spot with $41,229 per race. The sprint champion mare Xtra Heat was based at Delaware, as were Afleet Alex, the near-Triple Crown winner, and Barbaro, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, who won in his career debut at 7-1 on the grass. Many horses that frequently go to and succeed at the big circuits in Kentucky, Florida, and New York now call the track home.
The only track in the middle of the Atlantic to consistently card Arabian races is Delaware Park. There is a significant Arabian and equestrian community in the area. Barbaro’s trainer, Michael Matz, took home the silver medal in the equestrian competition at the Atlanta, Georgia, Summer Olympics in 1996. Matz is among a number of mid-Atlantic trainers who have made an impression on the national scene, including Barclay Tagg, Tim Ritchey, the legendary trainer, and J. Larry Jones, the Delaware Park-based trainer of Hard Spun, the 2007 Kentucky Derby runner-up. Additionally, Jones was the trainer of the unfortunate Eight Belles, who broke her maiden at Delaware and went on to finish second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby before passing away suddenly after the race.
