Located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the coastal community of Del Mar, California, 20 miles north of San Diego, is the American Thoroughbred horse racing track known as Del Mar Racetrack. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which runs it, is well-known for its tagline, “Where The Surf Meets The Turf.” Bing Crosby, actor Pat O’Brien, Jimmy Durante, Charles S. Howard, and Oliver Hardy collaborated to build it.

Bing Crosby personally welcomed the audience at the entrance when Del Mar first opened in 1937. Charles S. Howard’s Seabiscuit and the colt Ligaroti of the Binglin Stable competed in a $25,000 winner-take-all match race held by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on August 12, 1938. The match race, which was the first nationwide broadcast of a Thoroughbred event by NBC radio, was widely written about and discussed during a time when Americans preferred Major League Baseball to horse racing. George Woolf, the jockey, rode Seabiscuit in the race, while Noel Richardson rode Ligaroti. Seabiscuit prevailed by a nose in an exciting race while being seen by a record audience that contributed to the success of the newly opened Del Mar race track. Many Hollywood stars made Del Mar their summer playground by 1940. The Second World War forced the plant to close between 1942 and 1944. The grounds are first utilized by the Marines for training, then later on, they are employed as a location for the production of B-17 bomber parts.
In 1946, Del Mar hosted the inaugural Bing Crosby Handicap. Simultaneously, the Sante Fe Railroad started providing a racetrack special that brought spectators, bettors, and horses from Los Angeles to Del Mar. For summer racing, the track evolved into the Saratoga of the West in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The famed jockey Bill Shoemaker won more than half of the huge payouts offered by the track for a variety of stakes. Del Mar remained one of the top racetracks in the nation and continued to provide top-notch racing throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1960s, the track made an attempt to host an autumn meet, but it was eventually called off due to poor attendance. This made it possible for the Santa Anita racetrack to establish the Oak Tree Racing Association.
The 1980s brought about change with the opening of the infield to the public and the appointment of Trevor Denman as Del Mar’s spokesperson in 1984. The track kept growing in purses, handle, and attendance while continuing to provide the best summer racing in the West.
During the 1990s, the track saw a significant overhaul. The Del Mar Fairgrounds’ grandstand was replaced after being dismantled. The track hosted the $1,000,000 Grade I Pacific Classic Stakes in 1991, which was the richest race it had ever held. Best Pal, an excellent three-year-old, took home the first Classic. The track maintained its attendance and handle records far into the new century and continued to host some of the best thoroughbred racing in the country.
Every year, the track welcomes up to 40,000 spectators for the start of its 43-day summer racing season in mid-July.
Track announcer Trevor Denman kicks off each racing season with his signature call, “And there’s the roar from the Del Mar crowd as the (year) Del Mar meet is begun,” at 2:00 pm on opening day.
