Alex Karaban Says UConn Championship Culture Has Him Ready for NBA Career With Kings

After helping build one of college basketball’s modern dynasties, Alex Karaban believes he’s arriving in the NBA with an advantage many rookies don’t have.

The former UConn Huskies star is beginning his professional career with the Sacramento Kings, bringing with him four seasons of experience under legendary head coach Dan Hurley, two NCAA national championships, and a winning mentality he believes will translate immediately to the NBA.

Now participating in NBA Summer League, Karaban says the reality of becoming a professional finally hit once he stepped into Sacramento’s facilities.

“It’s sunk in a little bit now after wearing the jersey and just being in the facility. It’s been a blessing. I’m super excited to be a King and can’t wait to see where my career takes me.”

Dan Hurley’s Coaching Prepared Him for the NBA

Karaban credits much of his development to Hurley’s demanding coaching style.

While Hurley has built a reputation as one of college basketball’s most intense coaches, Karaban says the honesty and accountability he experienced at UConn prepared him for the expectations of professional basketball.

“He’s extremely honest with you. He’s never going to sugarcoat whether you’re doing something good or bad. He’s going to be my mentor. He’s someone I’m always going to look up to.”

Rather than focusing solely on winning championships, Karaban believes the daily habits established inside the UConn program will have the greatest impact on his NBA career.

“I’ve seen every scenario at UConn through the wins, the losses, the championships. I know how hard it is to win. Those winning characteristics and what you’re supposed to do on a daily basis can easily be carried over to the NBA and help change the culture.”

Academic Visit Sealed His Commitment to UConn

Karaban also reflected on how close he came to taking a different path before arriving in Storrs.

While basketball initially drove his recruitment, academics ultimately convinced both him and his family that UConn was the right fit.

He recalled one memorable recruiting trip that focused almost entirely on education.

“They sent a van to my house, and it was strictly an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. academic visit. It got the job done and allowed me to commit.”

That decision proved transformative.

Karaban leaves UConn as one of the most accomplished players in program history, winning two national championships while becoming the school’s all-time leader in three-pointers made, as well as setting program records for games played, games started, minutes, and victories.

Championship Experience Could Benefit Sacramento

The Kings selected Karaban believing his combination of basketball IQ, floor spacing, defensive versatility, and winning experience could strengthen their young roster.

Unlike many NBA rookies, Karaban arrives after spending four years in a championship-caliber college program where every practice, game, and postseason run carried high expectations.

That experience has shaped how he approaches the professional game.

Kings Fans Already Remind Him of UConn

Karaban also sees a familiar atmosphere awaiting him in Sacramento.

One of his favorite aspects of playing at UConn was the passionate fan support, and he expects Kings fans to bring that same energy throughout his NBA career.

“The fans are super passionate. Part of the reason why I loved UConn so much was the fans. That’s going to be the same thing with the Kings. You want to play hard, and you want to win for the city.”

Summer League Opportunity Continues

Karaban is expected to continue his NBA Summer League schedule against the Brooklyn Nets, where he’ll continue adapting to the professional game while showcasing the leadership, shooting ability, and championship habits that made him one of the most successful players in UConn basketball history.

For Sacramento, the hope is that Karaban’s winning pedigree won’t just help him earn minutes—it can also contribute to building a stronger culture as the Kings continue chasing sustained success in the Western Conference.
