Who Is Rintaro Sasaki? Meet the Marlins’ 2026 Eighth-Round MLB Draft Pick
Rintaro Sasaki Faces Major Career Decision After Marlins Select Japanese Slugger in 2026 MLB Draft
The Miami Marlins may have landed one of the biggest steals of the 2026 MLB Draft, but whether Rintaro Sasaki ever puts on a Marlins uniform remains one of the draft’s biggest unanswered questions.
Selected in the eighth round (No. 235 overall), Sasaki enters a unique situation unlike almost any other prospect in this year’s class. The 21-year-old Stanford first baseman must now decide between beginning his professional career in Major League Baseball, returning to college, or heading back to Japan, where the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks still own his negotiating rights after selecting him in the 2025 Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) Draft.
Marlins Bet on Elite Power Potential
Miami’s scouting department believes Sasaki possesses one of baseball’s rarest tools: elite raw power.
Known as Japan’s all-time high school home run leader, Sasaki continued to showcase that power during his sophomore season at Stanford, batting .262 with 16 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a .952 OPS across 54 games. Just as encouraging for scouts was his improved plate discipline, drawing 45 walks while striking out only 50 times, a sign that his offensive approach continues to mature.
His draft stock climbed even higher during the MLB Draft Combine, where he crushed a 458-foot home run and registered exit velocities reaching 115.4 mph, numbers that ranked among the most impressive in the entire draft class.
Marlins area scout Scott Fairbanks believes Sasaki’s offensive ceiling is difficult to find.
“Huge. It’s hard to find. That’s a big reason why I like him. His name came up on the board. You look around, it’s just not out there, so it’s unbelievably valuable.”
More Than Just Raw Power
While Sasaki’s home run ability has always attracted attention, Miami’s scouts believe his overall offensive game took a significant step forward in 2026.
Fairbanks pointed specifically to Sasaki’s improved approach at the plate.
“His at-bats got better. He started getting to that big, huge power that we all know he has. I think there’s still room for even more. He’s become more of a complete hitter.”
The Marlins were also impressed by Sasaki’s maturity, coachability, and work ethic after extensively scouting him throughout the collegiate season.
Three Possible Paths Forward
Now comes the difficult decision.
Sasaki essentially has three realistic options that could shape the rest of his baseball career.
Sign with the Miami Marlins: Joining Miami would provide the fastest route toward reaching Major League Baseball through the organization’s minor league development system. The Marlins also have a need for long-term power at first base, making Sasaki a potentially valuable addition to their farm system.
Return to Stanford: Another season with the Cardinal could significantly improve Sasaki’s draft stock and allow him to continue refining his offensive game against top collegiate competition before entering a future MLB Draft.
Play in Japan’s NPB: Because the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks still hold his negotiating rights, Sasaki could begin his professional career in Japan immediately. However, that path could delay an eventual MLB move, as NPB players generally need either nine years of service time or a posting agreement from their club before making the transition to Major League Baseball.
Marlins Hope Patience Pays Off
Miami understands the circumstances surrounding its eighth-round selection.
Vice President of Amateur Forecasting Frankie Piliere acknowledged that Sasaki has earned the opportunity to carefully evaluate every option available.
“Rintaro has a lot of good options, and I think he’ll choose the one that’s best for him. He’s put himself in a position where he can make those great choices.”
Regardless of his decision, Sasaki remains one of the most fascinating prospects from the 2026 MLB Draft. His combination of elite power, improving plate discipline, and international pedigree gives him the potential to become an impact hitter at the professional level.
For now, the Marlins can only wait to see whether one of the draft’s most intriguing talents chooses Miami as the next chapter of his baseball journey.
