Padres Catching Concerns Continue as Behind-the-Plate Issues Mount
After being sidelined for a little more than a week due to symptoms of a concussion, Freddy Fermin was finally able to return to the starting lineup for the San Diego Padres. JP Sears, who was starting on the bench, was able to win the game, and the Atlanta Braves were swept in the series thanks to his efforts. Fermin’s inability to have an impact from the bottom third of the lineup is the only thing that can be considered a negative.
The fact that he did not hit a single hit during his return brought Fermin’s season batting average down to.145, and his on-base percentage (OPS) was a disappointing.505 in 124 at-bats. The inconsistency of the offensive play has been a problem throughout the entire season. It is not possible for the Padres to persevere through yet another difficult stretch in which the bottom of the order struggles to score runs.
In order to improve their hitting options at the catcher position, the front office needs to acquire a superior hitting option.
Padres reluctant to call-up Salas
At first, the Friars were hesitant to bring Ethan Salas up to the major leagues when Fermin was removed from the lineup.
